Commentary: (1) There is a difference of opinion regarding the authenticity of this hadith. Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has declared it authentic. See: (al-Sahihah, no. 126) In this, there is the glad tidings of the martyrdom of Talhah radi Allahu anhu, which is a tremendous felicity.
(2) His martyrdom occurred on the occasion of the Battle of Jamal. From this, it is understood that the Companions radi Allahu anhum who were martyred in the mutual conflicts were not criminals in the sight of Allah; otherwise, they would not have been given the glad tidings of martyrdom.
