حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ وَكِيعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، وَيَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيل بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو سَهْلَةَ، قَالَ : قَالَ عُثْمَانُ يَوْمَ الدَّارِ : " إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ عَهْدًا فَأَنَا صَابِرٌ عَلَيْهِ " . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى : هَذَا حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ غَرِيبٌ ، لَا نَعْرِفُهُ إِلَّا مِنْ حَدِيثِ إِسْمَاعِيل بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ .
´Narrated Abu Sahlah:` "The day of the house (when he was besieged), 'Uthman said: 'Indeed the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) took a covenant from me, and I will abide by it.'"

Explanation:

By "this covenant" is meant that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had said that Allah, the Exalted, will clothe you with a garment; people will want to have it removed from you, but do not remove it. (By this, the garment of caliphate is meant.) This is why Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) was martyred but did not relinquish the caliphate, because, by the command of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he was upon the truth.
