English Commentary:
1:
This is the preferred (rajih) opinion.
2:
This is the school of thought (madhhab) of Shu’bi and Hasan ibn Salih and their followers.
3:
Imam Tirmidhi has mentioned here only three schools of thought; besides these three, there are other opinions as well. Among them is the view that both ears are part of the face, therefore they should be washed along with the face. This is the position taken by Imam Zuhri and Dawud al-Zahiri. Another opinion is that they should be washed with the face and wiped (masah) with the head.

Benefits and Issues:
The corners of the eyes may remain dry due to the folds of the skin, therefore one should make sure to rub them. According to Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah, this narration is authentic without the addition of “the corners of the eyes” «مسح المأقين».
