´Narrated Abu Hurairah:` that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "While a man was tending some of his sheep, a wolf came and took a sheep. So its owner came and retrieved it. The wolf said: 'What will you do for it on the Day of the Predator, the Day when there will be no shepherd for it other than me?'" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "So I believe in that, I and Abu Bakr, and 'Umar." (One of the narrators) Abu Salamah said: "And the two of them were (present) not among the people that day."
Muhammad bin Bashar narrated to us, he said: Muhammad bin Ja'far narrated to us, he said: Shu'bah narrated to us from Sa'd bin Ibrahim a similar hadith. © Imam Tirmidhi says: This hadith is Hasan Sahih.

Hadith Commentary:
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had certainty regarding the strength of faith (iman) of Abu Bakr and Umar (radi Allahu anhuma). Therefore, in their absence, he bore witness to their faith and conviction.

Hadith Commentary:
➊ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had certainty regarding the strength of faith of Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) and Umar (radi Allahu anhu), and for this reason, in their absence, he bore witness to their faith and conviction.
➋ Allah, the Exalted, is capable of all things. He created the ability to speak in the ox and the wolf.
➌ From this hadith, it is also understood that animals should only be used for those purposes for which they are customarily employed. One should not ride oxen, nor should sheep and goats be used for agricultural work.

Hadith Commentary:
By "the day of the wild beasts," the Day of Resurrection is meant, when even the shepherds will abandon the guarding of their sheep; everyone will become preoccupied with concern for their own selves. This hadith has already been mentioned above, with the additional detail that Abu Bakr and Umar were not present there.
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has deduced the virtue of Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu from this hadith.
He (the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) mentioned their names after himself; he had complete trust in them and knew that both of them were so firmly grounded in faith that they would never reject his statement.

Hadith Commentary:
➊ In one narration, it is explicitly stated that they were not present there at that time.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Harth wal-Muzara‘ah, Hadith: 2324)
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said this relying on the faith and strength of conviction of the two Shaykhs (Abu Bakr and Umar, radi Allahu anhuma).
➋ Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has also mentioned this hadith among the incidents of Bani Isra’il, from which it is understood that, according to him, this incident occurred before Islam, among the Children of Israel. However, a similar incident happened to Ahban bin Aws as well. He narrates that he was grazing his sheep when a wolf attacked and snatched away a sheep.
When I chased after it, it turned towards me and said:
“When they are left wandering, who will be their guardian at that time? So you want to snatch away from me the sustenance that Allah has given me?”
When I expressed astonishment, it said:
“This matter is even more astonishing: in this cluster of date palms, a Prophet has appeared who is calling people to Allah, and people are turning away from him.”
After this, Ahban came to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), narrated this incident, and accepted Islam.
It is possible that at the time the incident was reported, the two Shaykhs were present, but when the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) informed others, they were not present at that time. However, it is more likely that during both the reporting and informing, the Shaykhs were not present, and the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) gave this testimony relying on their conviction and strength of faith.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
By "the day of the beasts of prey" is meant the era of tribulations (fitan), when people, due to these tribulations, will become heedless of their wealth and livestock.
➋
According to some people, the meaning of "sabu‘" (beasts of prey) is "neglected," that is, when goats are left neglected so that anyone who wishes may seize them. However, the first meaning is clearer and more apparent.
➌
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), relying on the faith and strength of conviction of the two Shaykhs (Abu Bakr and Umar, radi Allahu anhuma), affirmed their statement. This hadith demonstrates the virtue of Umar (radi Allahu anhu).

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: This hadith establishes that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had the utmost trust in Abu Bakr and Umar (radi Allahu anhuma). That is why he stated with complete confidence that, because he was the one narrating, they would accept this incident without hesitation, and it would not cause them any astonishment. As for "yawm al-sab‘" (the day of the seven), it refers to the time when wolves will have dominance over the goats, and there will be no shepherd present with them.

Explanation:
1:
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had such strong certainty regarding both of them that whatever I say, both of them will say, "We have believed and affirmed it" (aamanna wa saddaqna).
That is why, even in their absence, he affirmed on their behalf.
This is evidence of their virtue.

Benefit:
In this hadith, the virtue of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (radi Allahu anhum) is established, in that whenever the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would emphatically mention something in their absence, he would mention their names along with his own. Furthermore, this hadith also proves that, at times, by the command of Allah, even animals speak.
