Hadith 3559

´Abu Bakr narrated:` That the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “He who seeks forgiveness has not been persistent in sin, even if he does it seventy times in a day.”

1514. English Commentary:
➊ The meaning of istighfar is to seek forgiveness from Allah for one’s sins; that He may cover them with His mercy and not disgrace the servant.
➋ To persist and insist upon one’s sins is the habit of the wrongdoers and sinners.
He listens to the verses of Allah which are recited to him, yet he persists (in his sins), acting arrogantly as if he had not heard them. So give him glad tidings of a painful punishment. Whereas the attribute of a God-fearing (muttaqi) person is the opposite of this.
The God-fearing do not persist in what they have done, and they know.
