Hadith 352

´Ibn Umar narrated:` "The Prophet performed Salat towards his she-camel, or his mount, and he would perform Salat while on his mount, whichever direction it was facing."

Brief Explanation
1؎ : In the footnote to the previous hadith, Imam Tirmidhi has indicated towards this very point. In such a case, the only condition is that at the time of the opening takbir (takbir al-tahrimah), one should face the qiblah, and after that, wherever the mount turns, it does not matter. However, this was only for voluntary (nafl) prayers; in obligatory (fard) prayers, one would dismount from the animal and perform the prayer facing the qiblah.

2؎ : And as for what has passed that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not pray in camel enclosures and forbade it, then the matter inside the enclosure is different, and the situation where, while on the road, one simply makes the camel sit and prays in front of it is another matter altogether.

English Commentary:
1:
In the footnote to the previous hadith, Imam Tirmidhi has alluded to this same point.
In such a case, the only condition is that at the time of the opening takbir (takbir al-tahrimah), one should face the qiblah, and after that, wherever the mount turns, it does not matter.
However, this was only for voluntary (nafl) prayers.
For obligatory (fard) prayers, they would dismount from the mount and perform the prayer facing the qiblah.

2:
And as for what has passed that you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not pray in camel enclosures and forbade it,
the matter inside the enclosure is different,
and the situation where, while on the road, one simply makes the camel sit and prays in front of it is a different matter.
