Hadith 3511

´Umar bin Abu Salamah narrated from his mother, Umm Salamah, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:` “When a calamity strikes one of you, then let him say: ‘Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. O Allah, I seek reward with You for my affliction, so reward me for it, and replace it for me with something better (Innā lillāhi wa innā ilaihi rāji`ūn, Allāhumma `indaka aḥtasibu muṣībatī fa’jurnī fīhā wa abdilnī minhā khair).’” When the time of death was near Abu Salamah, he said: ‘O Allah, replace me for my wife, with better than me.” So when he died, Umm Salamah said: “Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. I seek reward with Allah for my affliction, so reward me for it.”

Explanation:
1:
We all belong to Allah, and to Him alone we shall return.
O Allah! I seek the reward for my calamities from You, so grant me a good reward for my patience over them,
and in exchange for these calamities, grant me something better than them.

Benefits and Issues:

➊ The reward for patience in the face of calamity is granted both in the Hereafter and, due to patience, Allah’s blessings are also attained in this world.

➋ The command of Allah alluded to in this hadith refers to Allah’s statement in the Noble Qur’an:
“And give glad tidings to those who are patient, those who, when a calamity befalls them, say: ‘Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him we shall return.’ Upon them are blessings from their Lord and mercy, and it is they who are the rightly guided.”

➌ This demonstrates the perfection of the faith of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in): that apparently, there was no likelihood of this supplication being accepted, yet even so, Umm Salamah (radi Allahu anha), in obedience to the Prophetic command (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), made the supplication and regarded the Prophetic statement as true and certain.

➍ Those who have faith in Allah’s promises—Allah fulfills their needs and completes His promises.
