Hadith 3482

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ زُهَيْرِ بْنِ الْأَقْمَرِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ قَلْبٍ لَا يَخْشَعُ وَمِنْ دُعَاءٍ لَا يُسْمَعُ وَمِنْ نَفْسٍ لَا تَشْبَعُ وَمِنْ عِلْمٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ هَؤُلَاءِ الْأَرْبَعِ " . قَالَ : وفي الباب ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، وَابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى : وَهَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ غَرِيبٌ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو .
´`Abdullah bin `Amr narrated that:` The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from a heart that does not humble itself, and from a supplication that is not heard, and from a soul that is never satisfied, and from knowledge that does not benefit, I seek refuge in You from these four (Allāhumma innī a`ūdhu bika min qalbin lā yakhsha`u, wa min du`ā’in lā yusma`u, wa min nafsin lā tashba`u, wa min `ilmin lā yanfa`u, a`ūdhu bika min hā’ula’il-arba`).”

Explanation:
1:
O Allah! I seek refuge in You from a heart that does not fear (i.e., in which there is no fear of Allah),
and I also seek refuge in You from a supplication that is not heard,
and I seek refuge in You from a soul that is never satisfied,
and I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit.
O Allah! I seek refuge in You from these four things.

(1) The father's intent is absolutely clear: that for deliverance from all the aforementioned diseases, reliance upon Allah Almighty is necessary. Without the support of Allah Almighty, it is extremely difficult to be saved from these "contagious and fatal" diseases. Then, whoever is afflicted with these spiritual diseases, for him there is the punishment of Hell and fire. A‘aadhana Allahu minhu (May Allah protect us from it).

(2) The reason the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) recited the aforementioned supplication and taught it to the Ummah was solely to practically demonstrate to the Ummah that the only solution to all their ailments is to seek refuge in Allah Almighty, to rely upon Him, and to seek safety from Him alone. People, in order to avoid afflictions, resort to amulets and self-invented litanies, whereas the solution to all difficulties lies in the supplications taught by the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). These alone should be adopted so that deliverance from spiritual and physical diseases can be attained.

(3) By cowardice is meant fleeing from sacrificing one's life in the path of Allah Almighty, and by miserliness is meant avoiding spending wealth in the path of Allah Almighty.

(4) By the trial of the chest is meant satanic whisperings, false beliefs, and the corruptions of the heart, such as envy, malice, hatred, and enmity, etc. It has already been mentioned that the seeking of refuge by the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was primarily for the instruction of the Ummah; otherwise, he was absolutely pure and free from all vices. Even the thought of such things regarding him cannot be entertained.
