´Aishah [may Allah be pleased with her] narrates, saying:` “When the Prophet (ﷺ) would see the wind he would say: ‘O Allah, indeed, I ask You for its good, the good of what is in it, and the good of what it has been sent with. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil of what is in it, and the evil of what it has been sent with (Allāhumma innī as’aluka min khairihā wa khairi mā fīhā, wa khairi mā ursilat bihī, wa a`ūdhu bika min sharrihā wa sharri mā fīhā, wa sharri mā ursilat bih).’”

O Allah! I ask You for its good,
and I desire the good that is within it, and the good with which it has been sent,
and I seek refuge in You from its evil, and from the evil that is hidden within it, and from the evil with which it has been sent.

Hadith Commentary:
Air is also one of Allah’s creations, which possesses various effects, and by Allah’s power, it plays a significant role in the lives of all creatures.
Allah sent the punishment of drought upon the people of ‘Ad.
They sent some of their people to Makkah Sharif so that they might go there and supplicate for rain.
However, those people became engrossed in luxury and pleasure there and forgot to make supplication.
Meanwhile, clouds gathered over the settlements of their people.
The people thought that this was the result of the supplications of those men.
But those clouds took the form of punishment and destroyed that people.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
The wind is also a creation of Allah Ta’ala, which possesses various effects and plays a significant role in the rise and fall of nations.
Allah Ta’ala sent drought upon the people of ‘Ad.
These people had been longing for rain for a very long time.
During this period, they saw a dark cloud approaching their region.
They rejoiced with happiness, thinking that prosperity was about to come.
Little did they know whether this cloud was a cloud of mercy or Allah’s punishment sent to destroy them.
This storm was extremely swift and intensely cold, which continued to blow upon them for eight days and seven nights without interruption.
2.
From this incident, we learn that one should not be captivated by the outward appearance of anything, but should always remain fearful of Allah Ta’ala.
Although Allah Ta’ala had given you reassurance in words:
﴿وَمَا كَانَ اللَّهُ لِيُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَأَنْتَ فِيهِمْ﴾ “Allah will not punish them while you are among them.”
()
Despite this, you continued to fear Allah Ta’ala, lest it happen that, in the absence of your person among those people, this cloud might take the form of punishment and annihilate them.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
In one hadith, it is mentioned that when a strong wind would blow, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would recite this supplication:
(اللَّهُمَّ إِني أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهَا ، وَخَيْرِ مَا فِيهَا ، وخَيْر ما أُرسِلَتْ بِهِ ، وَأَعُوذُ بك مِنْ شَرِّهِا ، وَشَرِّ ما فِيها ، وَشَرِّ ما أُرسِلَت بِهِ)
“O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, the goodness within it, and the goodness with which it was sent, and I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil within it, and the evil with which it was sent.”
When the clouds would gather densely in the sky, the color of his blessed face would change, and a state akin to fear would overcome him, causing him to be restless—sometimes going outside, sometimes coming inside, sometimes moving forward, and sometimes moving back.
When the rain would fall, he would breathe a sigh of relief.
(Sahih Muslim, Salat al-Istisqa, Hadith: 2085.
(899))
➋
When the punishment of wind descended upon the people of ‘Ad, its intensity was such that it would uproot trees and plants from their very roots and hurl them far away.
This very storm penetrated their underground dwellings, and during this time, they could not even leave their homes. Due to the severity of the cold, they shivered and died.
Nothing could be seen there except ruins. That fierce and intensely cold wind blew upon the people of ‘Ad continuously for eight days and seven nights. The lesson we derive from this incident is that one should not be fearless due to the apparent form or appearance of anything, nor should one rely upon it; rather, in every circumstance, one should remain fearful of Allah, the Exalted.
And Allah is the One whose help is sought.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The aforementioned narration from Aisha (radi Allahu anha) is also transmitted with clarification that whenever the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) saw a cloud or something similar on the horizon, he would abandon his work. If the cloud dispersed, he would praise Allah, and if rain fell, he would say:
“O Allah! Make it beneficial for us.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Al-Adab, Hadith: 5099)
In another narration, it is mentioned that in such circumstances, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would become anxious, sometimes going inside and sometimes coming outside; the anxiety would be apparent on his face.
(Sahih Muslim, Salat al-Istisqa, Hadith: 899)
(2)
The narration of Imam Awza‘i (rahimahullah) has been transmitted in “Amal al-Yawm wa’l-Laylah” with a connected chain.
In it, instead of “nafi‘an” (beneficial), the wording is “hani’an,” which means pleasant.
The narration of ‘Aqil has been reported by Imam Daraqutni (rahimahullah).

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: This hadith establishes that no matter how high and exalted a person's rank and status may be, he cannot be free from fear of Allah's punishment. Therefore, upon witnessing anything that could be a precursor to destruction or ruin, one should seek refuge with Allah, and at times of strong winds or storms, one should recite the supplication mentioned in the hadith.

When they saw it coming towards their valleys as a cloud, they said:
“This is a cloud coming to bring us rain,”
Rather, it is that punishment which you were impatient for (it is a wind in which there is a very painful punishment) (: al-Ahqaf: 24)

as has been mentioned above.

Benefits and Issues:
(1)
The fear of Allah was very great in the heart of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
A believer should also fear the punishment of Allah.
(2)
The Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was not the knower of the unseen (al-ghayb).
Knowledge of the unseen is with Allah alone.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Rain is a mercy from Allah, but it can also be a punishment from Allah. Therefore, when seeing clouds, one should both hope for Allah’s mercy and seek refuge from His punishment.
➋ Despite rain being extremely necessary for humans, there is also an aspect of harm in it. Therefore, it is necessary to supplicate for the rain to be beneficial.
➌ The clouds dispersing without raining is, therefore, a favor from Allah, as the danger of it being a punishment has been averted.
➍ A servant should always maintain both hope in Allah and fear of Allah, and at such times, it is important to be consistent in reciting these supplications.

Benefit:
In this hadith, the supplication to be recited at the time of rainfall is mentioned: when it begins to rain, we should recite this supplication: «اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا» so that the rain becomes a source of benefit and does not come as harm or punishment. If this rain descends at the appropriate time and in the appropriate amount, it becomes a mercy; but if it descends at an inappropriate time or in an inappropriate amount, it becomes a hardship.
