´Mutarrif bin Abdullah bin Ash-Shikh-khir reported from his father, :` that he went to the Prophet and he was reciting: ‘The mutual rivalry (for piling up worldly things) diverts you.’ He said: “The son of Adam says: ‘My wealth, my wealth.’ And do you own anything except what you give in charity, such that you’ve spent it, or what you eat, suc that you’ve finished it, or you wear, such that you’ve worn it out?”
Hadith Referenceسنن ترمذي / كتاب تفسير القرآن عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم / 3354
1؎: That is, the true wealth of the son of Adam is only that which he spent in the way of Allah, or that which he himself ate, drank, and wore until it became worn out. As for the remaining wealth that will be left behind, it is not truly his own wealth, but rather it is the wealth of his heirs.

´Mutarrif narrated from his father, that he met up with the Prophet (s.a.w) while he was saying:` "The mutual increase diverts you". He (s.a.w) said: "The son of Adam says:'My wealth, my wealth, but is there something for you from your wealth besides what you give in charity that remains, or you eat which perishes, or what you wear that grows worn?"

Explanation: 1: The meaning is that a person considers as his own the wealth that is in his possession, whereas the true wealth is that which he has given in charity (sadaqah) for the sake of earning reward, and which he has set aside for the Day of Recompense. The rest of the wealth, he has consumed by eating and drinking, or worn out by using it until it became old and worn. Other than the wealth given in charity, no wealth will benefit him in the Hereafter. This hadith encourages spending on those who are deserving and in the ways beloved to Allah.
