´Zirr bin Hubaish [and Zirr bin Hubaish’s Kunyah is Abu Mariam] said:` “I said to Ubayy bin Ka’b: ‘Your brother Abdullah bin Mas’ud says: “Whoever stands (in voluntary prayer) the whole year, then he will have reached the Night of Al-Qadr.’” So he said: ‘May Allah forgive Abu Abdur-Rahman. He knows that is during the last ten (nights) of Ramadan, and that it is the night of the twenty-seventh. But he wanted the people to not rely upon that.’ Then he uttered an oath, that without exception it is on the night of the twenty-seventh.” He said: “I said to him: ‘Why is it that you say that O Abu Al-Mindhir?’ He said: “By the sign or indication which the Messenger of Allah informed us of: ‘That the sun rises on that day having no beams with it.’”

Brief Explanation
1؎ : Based on several years of experience, after having found the mentioned signs applicable to the 27th night, Ubayy ibn Ka'b radi Allahu anhu made this claim, and its chain of narration is also authentic; therefore, his claim is based on truth. However, according to the Sunnah, performing i'tikaf for ten days is a separate Sunnah and a separate means of reward and merit. Also, those who spend the night in worship only on the odd nights will indeed attain Laylat al-Qadr, and additional reward and merit will be separate. As for the statement about seeking Laylat al-Qadr throughout the entire year: this could be the personal ijtihad of Ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu. In any case, the attainment of Laylat al-Qadr and its reward and merit are already determined.

Explanation: 1: Based on several years of experience, after having found these mentioned signs applicable to the night of the 27th, only then did Ubayy ibn Ka'b radi Allahu anhu make this claim, and its chain of narration is also authentic. Therefore, his claim is based on truth. However, according to the Sunnah, performing i'tikaf (spiritual retreat) for ten days is a separate Sunnah, and is a separate means of reward, and likewise, those who spend the odd nights in night vigil will certainly attain Laylat al-Qadr, and there will be additional reward as well. As for the statement about seeking Laylat al-Qadr throughout the entire year: this could be the personal ijtihad (independent reasoning) of Ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu. In any case, the attainment of Laylat al-Qadr and its reward is already determined.
