´Muhammad bin Al Munkadir narrated that:` Jabir [may Allah be pleased with him] said: “The Messenger of Allah came out to his Companions, and recited Surat Ar-Rahman from its beginning to its end for them, and they were silent. So he said: ‘I recited it to the Jinns on the ‘Night of the Jinns,’ and they had a better response to it than you did. Each time I came to Allah’s saying: ‘Which of your Lords favor do you deny.’ They said: “We do not deny any of Your favors our Lord! And Yours is praise.”

1؎: The phrase «فبأي آلاء ربكما تكذبان» appears 31 times in the entire surah, so according to this hadith, should the follower (muqtadi) say it 31 times in response to the imam during prayer? And that too, aloud? There is no such practice narrated from the Salaf (pious predecessors). Therefore, its meaning is either: when one hears it outside of prayer, then respond in this way; or, during prayer, saying it once in response is sufficient. On this matter, Imam Ahmad's fatwa is that one should say it quietly in one's heart (Maghni). And even this increased response is only held by some for voluntary (nafl) and Sunnah prayers.

Explanation: 1: The phrase ﴿فَبِأَيِّآلائِرَبِّكُمَاتُكَذِّبَانِ﴾ appears 31 times throughout the entire surah. So, following this hadith, should the follower (muqtadi) say this in response to the imam 31 times during the prayer? And that too, aloud? There is no such practice narrated from the Salaf (the pious predecessors). Therefore, its meaning is either: ➊ That outside of prayer, when one hears it, one should respond in this way; ➋ Or, that in prayer, responding once is sufficient. On this matter, Imam Ahmad's fatwa is that one should say it quietly in one's heart (see: al-Mughni), and most scholars hold that such responses are only to be given in voluntary (nafl) and Sunnah prayers.
