´Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:` "All types of women were prohibited for the Messenger of ALlah (ﷺ) except for the believing women among those who emigrated. (Allah) said: 'It is not lawful for you (to marry other) women after this, nor to change them for other wives even though their beauty attracts you, except those whom your right hand possesses (33:52). - And Allah made your believing girls lawful 'And a believing woman if she offers herself to the Prophet (33:50)' and He made every woman of a religion other than Islam unlawful." Then He said: "And whoever disbelieves in faith then fruitless is his work; and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers (5:5)." And he said: "Verily We have made lawful to you your wives, to whom you have paid their due, and those whom your right hands possess - whom Allah has given you" up to His saying: "A privilege to only you, not for the (rest of) the believers (33:50)." He made the other types of women unlawful."
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
Explanation:
1:
No woman is lawful for you after today.
And it is also not lawful for you to divorce any of your current wives and marry another woman in their place,
except for those slave women whom you come to possess (al-Ahzab: 52).
2:
Whoever denies faith, his deeds are rendered void,
and he will be among the losers in the Hereafter (al-Ma'idah: 5).
3:
O Prophet! We have made lawful for you your wives whose dowries you have given, and those slave women whom Allah has granted you as spoils of war (fay’) (al-Ahzab: 50).
4:
The meaning of this specific ruling is that it is not permissible for any Muslim other than the Prophet to marry a woman without a dowry (mahr) and without a guardian (wali).
A woman offering herself in marriage without a dowry is something that is exclusive to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
This has no connection to marrying paternal cousins, maternal cousins, or daughters of paternal or maternal aunts,
whereas some modernists of this era have raised this baseless issue.
Note:
(In the chain of narration, Shahr ibn Hawshab is a weak narrator.)
