´Narrated Masruq:` "I heard Khabbab bin Al-Aratt saying: 'I came to Al-'As bin Wa'il As-Sahmi to collect a debt he owed me. He said: 'You shall not be given anything until you deny Muhammad.' So I said: 'No, not until you are dead and resurrected.' He said: 'After I die and I am resurrected?' So I said: 'Yes.' So he said: 'I shall indeed have wealth and offspring to repay you with.' So (the following) Ayah was revealed: Have you seen him who disbelieved in Our Ayat and said: I shall certainly be given wealth and children (19:77).'"
'With this chain also,' Abu Muawiyah narrated from A'mash in the same way.

Hadith Commentary:
Khabbab used to work as a blacksmith, and ‘As ibn Wa’il, a disbeliever, had a sword made by him. Its wage was still due, and Khabbab had gone to demand it.
‘Amr ibn al-‘As, the well-known Companion, is the son of this disbeliever.
This incident took place in Makkah.
Such insolent disbelievers are still found in abundance today.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
Hazrat Khabbab bin Al-Aratt radi Allahu anhu was a blacksmith.
As bin Wa’il Sahmi had a sword made by him, for which the payment was due upon him.
To demand this payment, Hazrat Khabbab went to As bin Wa’il, upon which As made this statement, and then, in the background of this incident, these verses were revealed.
➋
This As bin Wa’il is the father of Amr bin Al-As. This As was considered a disbeliever and a respected chief. When Amr bin Al-As had not yet embraced Islam, he was the representative of the Qurayshi delegation that demanded the return of the Muslims who had migrated to Abyssinia. Later, when he became Muslim, he rendered great services for Islam.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
The meaning of Allah Ta'ala's statement is that ‘As ibn Wa’il, who is claiming that he will possess wealth and riches—does he have knowledge of the unseen, that there too (in the Hereafter) he will have an abundance of money and wealth? Or has he made some covenant or pact with Allah Ta'ala? Certainly not! Rather, this is merely an expression of arrogance and mockery of Allah’s verses. The wealth and children he is speaking of—the true inheritors of these are We (i.e., Allah Ta'ala).
➋
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written that ‘As ibn Wa’il, after reaching the age of eighty-five, met his end in Hell in Makkah. He was traveling to Ta’if riding on his donkey when the donkey threw him onto thorns. Thorns pricked his foot, causing it to swell, and this swelling became the cause of his death.

Hadith Commentary:
As ibn Wa'il made these statements in mockery and ridicule. In the present era, there are countless atheists and irreligious people of this kind who mock Islam and strive to demean it. On the Day of Resurrection, their condition will be like that of As ibn Wa'il. May Allah, the Exalted, protect us from such atheistic and irreligious utterances.

Hadith Commentary:
Translation of the Verse:
O Prophet, have you seen the one who disbelieved in Our signs and said, “Surely, I will be given wealth and children even if there is a Resurrection”? Has he gained knowledge of the unseen, or has he taken a firm covenant from Allah the Pure? Never! We will record what he says, and We will increase his punishment. And the wealth, possessions, and children of this world—all of it he will leave behind right here.
We alone will be his inheritors, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be brought before Us all alone, with nothing but his bare self and two ears.
‘As ibn Wa’il, the disbeliever, mockingly had this conversation with Khabbab ibn al-Aratt, and indeed, followers of this same ‘As ibn Wa’il—some atheists—are present in this era as well. It is said that an atheist once stole someone’s goat, slaughtered it, and ate it. When someone advised him, saying, “On the Day of Resurrection, you will have to return this goat,” he replied, “I will deny it.” The man said, “How will you deny it? The goat itself will testify.”
The atheist said, “Then what dispute will remain? I will grab it by the ears and hand it over to its owner, saying, ‘Here, take your goat and leave me alone.’”
This is the example of one atheist, but how many atheists in today’s age are found uttering such nonsense.
May Allah guide them to the straight path.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
‘As ibn Wa’il was a disbeliever.
He denied the Resurrection, the gathering and resurrection (hashr wa nashr), and reward and punishment, and he had this conversation with Khabbab ibn al-Aratt radi Allahu anhu in a mocking manner.
Allah Ta’ala revealed these verses in this context.
➋
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has narrated the aforementioned hadith of Khabbab ibn al-Aratt radi Allahu anhu under four different headings, through various chains, even though the incident is the same.
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah intends to show that all four verses are related to the same incident.

Hadith Commentary:
Benefits and Issues:
Khabbab radi Allahu anhu replied to ‘As ibn Wa’il,
“I will never deny Muhammad until you are resurrected again,”
and it is evident that resurrection will occur on the Day of Judgment, and after the Day of Judgment, the opportunity and place for faith and disbelief will have ended, and the results and outcomes will become manifest.
Therefore, the objection does not arise that Khabbab suspended disbelief upon being resurrected again, and ‘As, mocking and ridiculing, said,
(because he did not believe in resurrection)
“If I am given wealth and children at that time, then I will repay your debt.”
