Hadith 3119

Imam Tirmidhi says:
1- Qutaybah narrated to us, he says: Abu Bakr bin Shu'ayb bin Habhab narrated to us, and Abu Bakr narrated from his father Shu'ayb, and Shu'ayb from Anas bin Malik a hadith with the same meaning as this hadith, but they did not narrate it as marfu‘, nor did they mention the statement of Abu’l-‘Aliyah. This hadith is more authentic than the hadith of Hammad bin Salamah.
2- Several people have narrated a similar hadith as mawquf, and we do not know anyone except Hammad bin Salamah who has narrated it as marfu‘. This hadith has also been narrated by Ma‘mar, Hammad bin Zayd, and several others, but they did not narrate it as marfu‘.
‘Ahmad bin Abdah Dabi narrated to us, he said: Hammad bin Zaid narrated to us, and Hammad narrated from Shu‘aib bin Habhab from Anas, similar to the narration of Qutaybah, but he did not narrate it as marfu‘ (attributed directly to the Prophet).’
´Narrated Anas bin Malik:` "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was brought a dish with unripe dates on it. He said: The parable of a goodly word is that of a goodly tree, whose root is firmly fixed, and its branches (reach) to the sky (14:24 & 25).' And he said: 'It is the date-palm.' And the parable of an evil tree uprooted from the surface of the earth, having no stability (14:26). He said: 'It is the colocynth tree.'"

Hadith Grading

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
Explanation:
1:
The example of the pure word (kalimah tayyibah) is like that of a pure tree (the date palm), whose root is firm and whose branches are spread out in the sky. That (tree) gives its fruit continuously, by the permission of its Lord. ()

2:
The example of the evil word (evil speech) is like that of an evil tree, which can be uprooted from the surface of the earth; it has no stability (firmness). ()

Note:
(This is not authentically marfu‘,
it is the statement of Anas radi Allahu anhu,
as is mentioned in the next narration.)
