Hadith 3112

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، وَالْأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ : " جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ : إِنِّي عَالَجْتُ امْرَأَةً فِي أَقْصَى الْمَدِينَةِ وَإِنِّي أَصَبْتُ مِنْهَا مَا دُونَ أَنْ أَمَسَّهَا ، وَأَنَا هَذَا فَاقْضِ فِيَّ مَا شِئْتَ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ : لَقَدْ سَتَرَكَ اللَّهُ لَوْ سَتَرْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ ، فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَيْئًا ، فَانْطَلَقَ الرَّجُلُ فَأَتْبَعَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلًا فَدَعَاهُ فَتَلَا عَلَيْهِ وَأَقِمِ الصَّلاةَ طَرَفَيِ النَّهَارِ وَزُلَفًا مِنَ اللَّيْلِ إِنَّ الْحَسَنَاتِ يُذْهِبْنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ ذَلِكَ ذِكْرَى لِلذَّاكِرِينَ سورة هود آية 114 إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ : هَذَا لَهُ خَاصَّةً ، قَالَ : لَا بَلْ لِلنَّاسِ كَافَّةً " ، قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى : هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ، وَهَكَذَا رَوَى إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، وَالْأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْوَهُ ، وَرَوَى سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلَهُ ، وَرِوَايَةُ هَؤُلَاءِ أَصَحُّ مِنْ رِوَايَةِ الثَّوْرِيِّ ، وَرَوَى شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْوَهُ .
´Narrated 'Abdullah:` "A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: 'I fondled a woman who lives on the edge of Al-Madinah, and I did with her what is less than intercourse, and here I am, so judge in my case as you will.' So 'Umar said to him: 'Allah covered you, so you should have covered yourself.' The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not give him any reply. The man left but the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent a man after him to call him. He recited to him: 'And perform Salat, at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night. Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds. That is a reminder for the mindful (11:114) until the end of the Ayah. A man among the people said: 'Is this specific for him?' He (ﷺ) said: 'No. Rather for all of the people.'" [Abu 'Eisa said:] This Hadith is Hasan Sahih. This is how it was reported by Isra'Il from Simãk, from Ibrahim, from 'Alqamah and Al-Aswad, from 'Abdullãh from the Prophet , and it is similar. Shu'bah reported it from Simãk [bin Harb], from Ibrahim, from AlAswad, from 'Abdullãh from the Prophet similarly. Sufyan AthThawri reported the same from Simãk, from Ibrahim, 'AbdurRahman bin Yazld, from 'Abdulläh from the Prophet (ﷺ). And the narrations of these people are more correct than the narration of Ath-Thawri. (Another chain) from 'Abdullãh from the Prophet with similar. (Another chain) from 'Abdulläh bin Mas'üd from the Prophet (ﷺ) with similar in meaning, but he did not mention "from Al-A'mash" in it. And Sulaimãn At-Taimi reported this Hadith from Abu 'Uthmãn An-Nahdi, from Ibn Mas'ud from the Prophet .

‘From Sufyan, Sufyan from Simak, Simak from Ibrahim, Ibrahim from Abdur Rahman bin Yazid, and Abdur Rahman from Abdullah bin Mas’ud, from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), a hadith with the same meaning is narrated. And in this chain, A’mash is not mentioned. And Sulaiman Taymi narrated this hadith from Abu Uthman Nahdi, and Abu Uthman from Ibn Mas’ud, from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).’

Hadith Commentary:
The performance of prayer is an expiation for sins.
This is further clarified by the following hadith:
It is narrated from Anas radi Allahu anhu that he said: I was in the service of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam when a man came and said:
O Messenger of Allah! I have committed a sin for which a prescribed punishment (hadd) is due; please carry it out upon me.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not inquire about the details from him.
In the meantime, the time for prayer arrived.
The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed the prayer.
That man also joined the congregation.
After completing the prayer, he again said: I have committed a sin for which a prescribed punishment (hadd) is due.
Please implement the Book of Allah upon me.
The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“Did you not pray with us?” He replied:
“Yes, I did.”
The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“Go! Allah, the Exalted, has forgiven your sin.”

Regarding the incident mentioned in this narration, the commentators have mentioned several names for the person involved.
Allamah ‘Ayni rahimahullah, after mentioning six names, has written that the incident pertains to Abu Yasar radi Allahu anhu.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: A woman came to a shopkeeper to buy dates. The shopkeeper, under the pretense of giving her good dates, took her to his house and engaged in kissing and embracing with her. She was the wife of a mujahid (one engaged in jihad). Then, when he became aware of his crime, he went to the service of Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu and then to Umar radi Allahu anhu. Both of them advised him to remain silent, conceal his own self, and repent. However, his restlessness and anxiety did not allow him to find peace. He then presented himself before the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. The Prophet said, "Have you deputized for a mujahid with his family in this manner?" He was extremely grieved. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam lowered his head. After a considerable time, the aforementioned verses were revealed.

The phrase طرفي النهار (the two ends of the day) refers to morning and evening, thus indicating the morning and evening prayers. And "zulaf" is the plural of "zulfa," which refers to that part of the night which is adjacent to the day, i.e., the beginning or end of the night. This refers to the 'Isha prayer or the Tahajjud prayer.

The statement "good deeds remove evil deeds" has three meanings: (1) Good deeds become an expiation for sins, and the ill effects of sins are removed through them. (2) By performing good deeds, a person's nature develops an aversion to evil, and the strength to abandon them is produced. (3) Where there is goodness, prosperity will arise, and sins will be removed.

Explanation:
1:
Establish the prayer at the two ends of the day and in parts of the night; indeed, good deeds remove evil deeds. That is a reminder for those who remember (Hud: 114).

2:
This refers to minor sins (saghirah), because major sins (kabirah) are not forgiven without repentance (tawbah), and only minor sins were committed by this man.

3:
That is, the narrations of Isra'il, Abu’l-Ahwas, and Shu’bah are more authentic (in chain of transmission) than the narration of Thawri.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The best course is that a person should conceal his sin and abundantly repent and seek forgiveness (istighfar) before Allah, and resolve to be cautious in the future.

➋ Those who, out of fear of Allah, present themselves for the prescribed punishment (hadd) in order to purify themselves from sins, their status is very lofty.

➌ Prayer (salah) and other good deeds continue to expiate a person’s ordinary sins, whereas repentance (tawbah) is obligatory for major sins (kaba'ir).

Benefits and Issues:

For a man to look at a woman or for a woman to look at a man with a sinful gaze, to touch, to kiss, etc.—all these are sinful acts. In the hadith, these have also been described as forms of zina (fornication/adultery). However, these are sins of a lesser degree than the actual immoral act. Therefore, when a person commits such acts and feels remorse in his heart, repents, and performs ablution (wudu) and then offers prayer, his sin will be forgiven. However, in the case of committing unlawful sexual intercourse, the implementation of the prescribed punishment (hadd) is necessary. Once the hadd is carried out, that sin is also forgiven.


A believer should have fear of Allah in his heart. If, due to the dominance of the commanding self (nafs al-ammarah) and Satan, a mistake occurs, then one should immediately be concerned with rectifying it and seeking forgiveness.


The prayers at the edges of the day are Fajr and Asr, with the Dhuhr prayer coming in between them. The prayers of the night are Maghrib and Isha. That is, the performance of the five daily prayers is a means for the forgiveness of sins.
