´Narrated Abu Hurairah:` that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) halted between Dajnan and 'Usfan, and the idolaters aid: "These people have a prayer which is more loved to them than their fathers and their children." That is, 'Asr. They gathered their forces and advanced altogether. And Jibra'il came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and told him to divide his Companions into two lines and lead them in prayer, and another group stood behind them on guard with their weapons. Then the other group came and prayed one Rak'ah with him. Then these people stood guard with their weapons, so each of them performed one Rak'ah while the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed two Rak'ahs.

Explanation:

1:
This is a reference to the verse: ﴿And when you (O Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) are among them and lead them in prayer, let a group of them stand (in prayer) with you and let them take their arms﴾ (an-Nisa: 102).

1544. Commentary:

➊ This is another form of the prayer of fear (salat al-khawf). This will be practicable when the fear is not intense, because at the beginning of the prayer everyone was together, and at the end of the prayer everyone was together as well. In fact, at the end, there was no one left facing the enemy; all were behind you. One group was completing the remaining units (rak‘at) of their prayer, and the others were simply sitting behind you. All gave the salutation (salam) at the same time.

➋ Najd refers to a highland region, and it existed in several areas, for example: Najd of Hijaz, Najd of Iraq, and Najd of Yemen. In the above hadith, Najd refers to Najd of Hijaz. And in the hadith containing the supplication (against Najd), it refers to Najd of Iraq. This is known from contextual clues and other ahadith.

1545. Commentary: The apparent meaning of the words is that both groups sufficed with only one rak‘ah each. However, there is also the possibility that they performed the second rak‘ah on their own, because the words of the hadith, “with the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam,” indicate this. The commentator of Sunan al-Nasa’i, Shaykh al-‘Atyubi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, in his commentary Dhakheerat al-‘Uqba, has considered the first opinion to be stronger. And Allah knows best.
