´Narrated 'Abdullah bin Yazid:` from Zaid bin Thabit that he heard about this Ayah: Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties about the hypocrites? (4:88) He said: "People among the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) returned on the Day of Uhud and there were two parties among them, a group who said: 'Kill them,' and a group that say not to. So Allah revealed this Ayah: Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties about the hypocrites? (4:88) So he said: "Indeed it is Taibah (Al-Madinah). And he said: 'It expels filth from it just like the fire expels filth from iron.'"

Hadith Commentary:
➊
These hypocrites, upon returning, have provided proof of their hypocrisy. Now, if you wish to say that we should not fight them, perhaps they may come to the right path, then this matter is not within your control.
➋
From this verse, it becomes clear that such hypocrites are liable to be killed, because their intention is to make you like themselves.
Here, it is also necessary to clarify that there was a type of hypocrite who belonged to the tribes spread around Madinah.
These people would certainly express goodwill and love towards the Muslims, but in practice, they would support their fellow disbelievers. For them, this criterion was set: if they migrate (hijrah) and come to you in Madinah and join you, then in that case, you should consider them truthful and show sympathy towards them. But if they do not make the sacrifice of leaving their homes, then do not hesitate at all to kill them. However, two types of hypocrites are exempted from this ruling of killing:
©.
Those who go to a people with whom a peace treaty has been concluded—do not pursue them.
©.
Those hypocrites who wish to remain neutral, neither joining you to fight their own people nor joining their people to fight you.
No fighting should be undertaken against these two types of people.
➌
The inclination of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah appears to be that by "them" is meant the hypocrites of Madinah itself.
Firstly, he has presented the hadith narrated from Zayd ibn Thabit radi Allahu anhu; secondly, he has explicitly stated regarding Madinah Tayyibah that it is like a furnace which removes the impurities from silver.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The characteristic of Madinah Tayyibah mentioned here applies to those who embraced Islam out of desire for Islam, but then corruption entered their hearts. Such people are not granted refuge by Madinah Tayyibah; otherwise, hypocrites did reside in Madinah Tayyibah, died there, and were buried there. Madinah Tayyibah did not expel them from itself because Madinah Tayyibah was their original place of residence. They did not live there as Muslims, nor did they have any love for Madinah Tayyibah. Their residence there was only because it was their homeland and their means of livelihood. (Umdat al-Qari: 7/598)
(2)
It is also possible that this characteristic of Madinah Tayyibah is specific to the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), such that in his time, only those who had not even a trace of faith in their hearts would leave Madinah Tayyibah out of aversion to it. Furthermore, it is also possible that this is specifically related to the coming of the greatest Dajjal, for at his arrival, all those who are spiritually diseased in their hearts will be expelled from Madinah Tayyibah through tremors. And Allah knows best.
