Narrated from Ibn Abi Mulaika that Humaid bin Abdur Rahman bin Awf informed him that Marwan bin Hakam said to his doorkeeper Abu Rafi: Go to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and say to him, "If every person who is pleased with what he has done and desires praise for what he has not done is deserving of punishment, then all of us would be deserving of punishment." Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: What concern do you have with this verse? It was revealed about the People of the Book. Then Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) recited this verse «وإذ أخذ الله ميثاق الذين أوتوا الكتاب لتبيننه للناس ولا تكتمونه» 1 and recited «لا تحسبن الذين يفرحون بما أتوا ويحبون أن يحمدوا بما لم يفعلوا» 2. And he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked them (the Jews) about something, so they concealed it and told him something else instead and left. Then it was made apparent to you that they had informed you about what you had asked them, and they desired to hear your praise for it, and they were pleased with the answer they gave you by hiding it from their book and with the way you addressed them. © Imam Tirmidhi says: This hadith is Hasan Gharib Sahih.
