Hadith 3012

´Narrated Abu Wa'il:` "'Abdullah [bin Mas'ud] narrating from the Prophet (ﷺ) that he said: 'There is no person who does not pay the Zakat due on his wealth but on the Day of Resurrection Allah will make a Shuja'a around his neck.' Then he recited the Ayah for us from the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, testifying to that: And let not those who are stringy with that which Allah has bestowed on them of His bounty... (3:180) And another time he said: 'Testifying to that, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recited: On the Day of Resurrection, the things that they were stingy with... (3:180)' and whoever deprives his Muslim brother of his wealth by swearing, then he shall meet Allah while He is angry with him.' Then testifying to that, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recited the Ayah from Allah's Book: Verily, those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's covenant (3:77)."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
Explanation:
1:
“Those whom Allah has given something out of His bounty should not consider their miserliness in it to be better for themselves; rather, it is extremely worse for them.” ()

2:
“Soon, on the Day of Resurrection, they will have collars made of that which they were miserly with placed around their necks.” ()

Urdu footnote:
"Bald snake." There is no hair on the body of a snake in the first place, therefore, what is meant by "bald" is that due to the abundance of venom or the length of its life, even the skin on its head would have peeled off. (al-Nihayah by Ibn al-Athir)

Benefits and Issues:

➊ When wealth reaches the nisab (minimum threshold), its zakat becomes obligatory.

➋ Criminals will be punished even before being cast into Hell on the Day of Resurrection.

➌ The bald snake refers to an extremely venomous snake whose head is white.

➍ If any worldly benefit is perceived in an act that is contrary to the Shariah, attention should be paid to its harm in the Hereafter, so that the worldly benefit appears insignificant and acting upon the Shariah becomes easy.

➎ The statements of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) are themselves explanations of the Noble Qur’an; therefore, sometimes the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would recite verses from the Qur’an and narrate hadiths along with his blessed statements, and their translation should also be presented.

➏ The blessing found in this is not attained by merely sufficing with the stories of the elders.

Benefit:
The wealth that has reached the threshold (nisab) for zakat, it is obligatory to pay its zakat; otherwise, there is a painful punishment. To act stingily in fulfilling the obligations is prohibited; rather, this stinginess will become a cause of humiliation on the Day of Resurrection. The one who, due to love of wealth, does not pay zakat, has made a mistake in understanding, because this is not wealth—in fact, it is a snake that will be placed around his neck on the Day of Resurrection, astaghfirullah. Therefore, one should not be negligent in paying zakat; rather, it should be paid in full, on time, and with happiness.
