´Narrated Anas:` "The face of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was wounded, his incisors were broken, and he was struck by an arrow on his shoulder. While blood was flowing over his face and he was wiping it, he said: 'How can a nation succeed while they are doing this to their Prophet and he is calling them to Allah?' So Allah, Most High revealed: Not for you is the decision; whether He turns in mercy towards them or punishes them; verily they are the wrongdoers (3:128)."

Hadith Commentary:
Benefits and Issues:
The Imam (may Allah have mercy on him) has narrated this hadith of Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) through approximately fifteen chains of transmission.
In some of them, there is detail, and in others, there is brevity and conciseness. Therefore, the true reality becomes clear only when all the narrations are considered together; otherwise, if only some of the concise narrations are taken into account, confusion may arise regarding this incident. In every case, in order to correctly understand the meaning of a narration, it is necessary to gather all the narrations related to the incident and to derive the intended meaning and interpretation from the collection as a whole.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ In jihad, the courage of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is a beautiful example for the believers.
➋ The statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was one of regret, that they have committed such a grave crime—who knows, perhaps as a consequence of it, punishment may befall them.
➌ Allah the Exalted has said that granting guidance is not your responsibility. Among them, some will be granted faith, while others, due to the punishment for their crime, will be consigned to Hell.
➍ The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) does not have control over the hearts of the creation, nor is it within his power to bring about or prevent punishment.
