´Narrated Anas:` "On the Day of Uhud, the incisors of the Prophet (ﷺ) were broken, and he had a facial wound in the area of the forehead, such that the blood flowed over his face. He said: 'How can a people that do this to their Prophet succeed, while he is calling them to Allah?' So the following was revealed: Not for you is the decision; whether He turns in mercy towards them or punished them... (3:128) until its end."

Hadith Commentary:
Benefits and Issues:
The Imam (may Allah have mercy on him) has narrated this hadith of Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) through approximately fifteen chains of transmission.
In some of them, there is detail, and in others, there is brevity and conciseness. Therefore, the true reality becomes clear only when all the narrations are considered together; otherwise, if only some of the concise narrations are taken into account, confusion may arise regarding this incident. In every case, in order to correctly understand the meaning of a narration, it is necessary to gather all the narrations related to the incident and to derive the intended meaning and interpretation from the collection as a whole.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ In jihad, the courage of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is a beautiful example for the believers.
➋ The statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was one of regret, that they have committed such a grave crime—who knows, perhaps as a consequence of it, punishment may befall them.
➌ Allah the Exalted has said that granting guidance is not your responsibility. Among them, some will be granted faith, while others, due to the punishment for their crime, will be consigned to Hell.
➍ The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) does not have control over the hearts of the creation, nor is it within his power to bring about or prevent punishment.
