Abu Ghalib says that Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the heads of the slain Khawarij of Harura hanging on the steps of the mosque of Damascus, so he said: "These are the dogs of Hell, the worst of those killed under the canopy of the sky, while the best of those killed are those whom they killed." Then he recited this verse «يوم تبيض وجوه وتسود وجوه» 1. I said to Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "If I had not heard it from him once or twice or three times or four times"—and he counted up to seven—"I would not have narrated it to you." © Imam Tirmidhi says:
1- This hadith is Hasan (good).
2- It is said about Abu Ghalib that his name is Hazur.
3- And the name of Abu Umamah Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) is Suda'i bin 'Ajlan; he was the chief of the tribe of Bahila.

Explanation & Benefits

Commentary:
(1)
In this, there is a severe condemnation of the Khawarij, and a clear statement regarding their being disbelievers (kuffar) and destined for Hellfire.

(2)
From this, it is understood that their beliefs are those of disbelief (kufr), due to which they were declared to have left Islam and adopted disbelief.

(3)
The Muslims who fought against the Khawarij attained a high status and virtue.

(4)
From this, the virtue of Ali (radi Allahu anhu) is established, because he fought against the Khawarij and was martyred at the hands of a Khariji.

Benefit:
In this hadith, the condemnation of the Khawarij is mentioned—those who declare everyone to be disbelievers (kafir), consider rebellion against them permissible, and unjustly kill Muslims. Such people are destined for Hell. We too, in Pakistan, are confronted with some similar takfiri and khariji individuals, who are bent on terrorism in a covert manner and have killed thousands of Muslims in Pakistan through suicide attacks. May Allah grant guidance to these people, ameen. Furthermore, this hadith is evidence that the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) were truthful individuals, and were far removed from falsehood.
