Hadith 2988

´Narrated 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud:` that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Indeed the Shaitan has an effect on the son of Adam, and the angel also has en effect. As for the Shaitan, it is by threatening evil repercussions and rejecting the truth. As for the effect of the angel, it is by his promise of a good end and believing in the truth. Whoever finds that, let him know that it is from Allah, and let him praise Allah for it. Whoever finds the other then let him seek refuge with Allah from the Shaitan (the outcast) then recite: Shaitan threatens you with poverty and orders you to commit Fahisha (2:268)."

Hadith Authentication:
The chain of narration for this report is weak.
Besides al-Tirmidhi [2988], it has also been narrated by al-Nasa'i [الكبريٰ : 11051] and Ibn Hibban [الاحسان : 993 دوسرا نسخه : 997].
The principal narrator of this report, Ata ibn al-Sa'ib, suffered from confusion (ikhtilat) due to memory impairment in the later part of his life. See: [نهاية الاغتباط بمن رمي من الرواة بالاختلاط 71] and al-Kawakib al-Nayyirat [ص319]
◈ Abu Hatim al-Razi said:
“He (Ata ibn al-Sa'ib) suffered from confusion (ikhtilat) at the end of his life.”

The following narrators heard from Ata ibn al-Sa'ib before his confusion (ikhtilat):
① Shu'bah
② Sufyan al-Thawri
③ Hammad ibn Zayd
④ Hammad ibn Salamah according to the majority
⑤ Hisham al-Dastuwa'i according to Abu Dawud
⑥ Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah
⑦ Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani
⑧ Zuhayr
⑨ Zaydah ibn Qudamah
⑩ Al-A'mash
See: al-Kawakib al-Nayyirat with commentary [
It is not established that Abu'l-Ahwas Salam ibn Sulaym heard from Ata ibn al-Sa'ib before his confusion (ikhtilat).
