Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
Explanation:
1:
From this hadith, it is understood that white clothing is better, purer, and more excellent in life, because a person dressed in white garments is free from arrogance, pride, and haughtiness. Whereas, in garments of other colors, there is a possibility of resemblance to the arrogant or to women. One should also shroud their deceased in these same white garments.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ White color is superior; therefore, it is better to wear white clothes on important occasions.

➋ White clothing is both beautiful and dignified. Dirt and stains become apparent on it quickly, so it is washed sooner and with greater attention, which is why it remains purer and cleaner.

➌ For shrouding (kafan), white cloth is preferable, although other types of cloth are also permissible, especially striped cloth. (Sunan Abi Dawud, Funerals, Chapter on the Shroud, Hadith: 3150)

1897. Commentary:
➊ Even a small amount of dirt or impurity becomes visible on white clothing; therefore, it is cleaned quickly and remains neat and clean. Dirt is not noticeable on colored clothing, so they are not washed for a long time, which can become a cause of diseases. In any case, white clothing has its own dignity.
➋ Unless there is a necessity, the shroud (kafan) should be white.
➌ Shrouding (kafan pehnana) is obligatory.

(1) Here, the command is in the sense of recommendation (istihbab), meaning that wearing only white clothes is not obligatory; rather, clothes of other permissible colors are also allowed, because the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) also used clothes of other colors, and so did the Companions (radi Allahu anhum). The same ruling applies to the shroud (kafan).

(2) "Pure and clean," because stains and blemishes are much more visible on white fabric. The more it is washed, the purer and cleaner it remains, whereas on some other colors, dirt and filth are not apparent even if such clothes are not washed for a long time. In reality, they may be dirty and at times even impure.

(3) "The deceased," because for them, both simplicity and cleanliness are appropriate, and both of these qualities are found to the highest degree in white clothing.
