Hanging Pictures or Wearing Clothes with Pictures
Al-Ittihaf al-Basim, Sharh Muwatta Imam Malik, narration of Ibn al-Qasim, Hadith No. 125:
It is narrated from Rafi‘ ibn Ishaq that he and ‘Abdullah ibn Abi Talhah went to visit (Sayyiduna) Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (radi Allahu anhu) during his illness. He informed them that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) told them: “Indeed, the angels (of mercy) do not enter a house in which there are statues or pictures.” Ishaq was in doubt; he was not certain which of the two words Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (radi Allahu anhu) had used.
Jurisprudential Points:
➊ Making pictures of living beings, such as humans, animals, and birds, is forbidden (haram).
➋ Some things are exempted from this general ruling of the prohibition of pictures:
Dolls and toys for children to play with, etc.
A picture of a bird on cloth: Sahih Muslim: [2107], Darussalam: [5521، 5522], etc.
Sayyiduna Anas (radi Allahu anhu) had a ring with the image of a standing lion. [
Sayyiduna ‘Imran ibn Husayn (radi Allahu anhu) had a ring with the image of a man with a sword hanging from his neck. [
➌ In the present era, inventions such as video and computer CDs do not fall under the ruling of pictures, because no actual image appears on them.
This is a scientific and technical achievement that humans have discovered; therefore, these inventions are permissible (mubah) for good purposes such as speeches, education, training, and debates, etc.
As for those matters which are against the Shari‘ah, they are impermissible in every situation, whether video or CDs are used for them or not.

Al-Ittihaf al-Basim, Sharh Muwatta Imam Malik, narration of Ibn al-Qasim, Hadith No. 260:
It is narrated from Umm al-Mu’minin ‘A’ishah (al-Siddiqah, radi Allahu anha) that she bought a small cushion-like blanket on which there were pictures. When the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) saw it, he stood at the door and did not enter. I saw signs of displeasure on his face and said: “O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)! I turn to Allah and His Messenger, what mistake have I made?” The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “What is this cushion?” I said: “I bought it for you so that you may sit on it and lean against it.” The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Those who make these pictures will be punished on the Day of Resurrection. It will be said to them: ‘Give life to what you have created.’” Then he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “The angels (of mercy) do not enter a house in which there are pictures.”
Verification: «
Takhrij: «

➊ Whether it is cloth or paper, making pictures of living beings is forbidden (haram).
➋ It is permissible to be angry over actions that are against the Book and the Sunnah.
➌ The angels of mercy do not enter a house in which there are pictures.
➍ If a mistake is made out of ignorance, it is excused, but a person of knowledge should explain with evidence to the one who is making a mistake unknowingly.
➎ The use of clothes on which there are pictures of living beings is forbidden (haram).
➏ The cloth on which there were pictures was torn by the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
➐ Sayyidah Fatimah (radi Allahu anha) once invited the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), so he went to her. Then, seeing a curtain hanging there, he returned.
Also see: [صحيح بخاري: 2613]
➑ In one narration, it is mentioned that Sayyiduna Abu Mas‘ud ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amr al-Ansari (radi Allahu anhu) refused to eat in a house where there was a picture.
➒ In all matters, one should refer to Allah and His Messenger, and this is the distinction of the people of truth.
* If the husband permits, the wife may buy and sell, keeping in view the rulings of Shari‘ah boundaries and hijab.
* The wife may dispose of her own wealth without the husband’s permission, and with his permission, she may dispose of his wealth.

Al-Ittihaf al-Basim, Sharh Muwatta Imam Malik, narration of Ibn al-Qasim, Hadith No. 427:
It is narrated from ‘Ubaydullah (ibn ‘Abdullah) ibn ‘Utbah ibn Mas‘ud that he went to visit (Sayyiduna) Abu Talhah al-Ansari (radi Allahu anhu) during his illness, and (Sayyiduna) Sahl ibn Hunayf (radi Allahu anhu) was also present there. Abu Talhah (radi Allahu anhu) called a man, then took out the sheet from under himself. Sahl ibn Hunayf (radi Allahu anhu) asked: “Why did you remove it?” He replied: “Because it has pictures on it, and you know what the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said.” Sahl (radi Allahu anhu) said: “Did you not say that except for the designs which are on cloth?” He replied: “Yes, but removing it is more beloved to my heart.”
