Ibn ‘Abbas reported God’s messenger as saying, “One faqih has more power over the devil than a thousand devout men.” Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it.
Hafiz Zubair Ali Zai
Hadith Authentication: The chain of narration for this report is extremely weak (fabricated). Its narrator, Rawh ibn Janah al-Dimashqi, has been declared weak and criticized by the majority of hadith scholars. ◄ Hafiz Ibn Hibban said: «منكر الحديث جدا، يروي عن الثقات ما إذا سمعها الإنسان الذى ليس بالمتبحر فى صناعة الحديث شهد لها بالوضع.» “He was severely munkar al-hadith (narrated highly objectionable reports); he would narrate such reports from trustworthy narrators that even a person with little expertise in hadith, upon hearing them, would testify that they are fabricated.” [المجروحين 1؍300، دوسرا نسخه 1؍374] ◄ Abu Nu‘aym al-Asbahani said: “He used to narrate objectionable (munkar) hadiths from Mujahid (the trustworthy Tabi‘i); he is nothing (i.e., not reliable at all).” [كتاب الضعفاء لابي نعيم ص81 ت67] ◄ Hakim al-Naysaburi said: «روي عن مجاهد أحاديث موضوعة.» “He narrated fabricated (mawdu‘) hadiths from Mujahid.” [المدخل الي الصحيح ص137 ت59] ↰ This severe criticism and the consensus of the majority prove that Rawh ibn Janah was extremely weak and used to narrate fabricated reports from Mujahid. ↰ It should be noted that the narration of a weak narrator can also be fabricated, provided that the eminent hadith scholars declare it fabricated or there is clear evidence of fabrication. It is not a necessary condition for a fabricated report that its narrator must inevitably be a liar (kadhdhab). ◄ Also see: [مجموع فتاويٰ ابن تيميه ج1 ص248], [علل الحديث لابن ابي حاتم 1؍74 ح196], [سنن ابن ماجه :1333], and [الضعيفة الالباني ج1۔ ص169 ح4644 وغير ذلك۔]
