Hadith Authentication:
This narration is weak with all its chains of transmission.
◄ In the narration from Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Ishaq bin Yahya bin Talhah bin Ubaydullah al-Qurashi al-Taymi is weak. See: [تقريب التهذيب : 39۔]
◄ Imam al-Tirmidhi stated at the same place:
“This hadith is gharib... and Ishaq bin Yahya bin Talhah is not considered strong by the (hadith scholars); there has been criticism regarding his memory.” [جامع ترمذي ص598 بتحقيق الالباني]
Severe criticism has been made against him by Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal and others.
◄ In the narration from Sunan Ibn Majah [253], Hammad bin Abdur Rahman is weak [تقريب التهذيب : 1502] and Abu Karib al-Azdi is unknown. [تقريب التهذيب : 8326]
◄ In Sunan Ibn Majah [254] and others, it is narrated through the chain of «ابن جريح عن ابي الزبير عن جابر بن عبدالله رضي الله عنه» that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
«لا تعملوا العلم لتباهوا به العلماء ولا لتماروا به السفهاء ولا تخيروا به المجالس فمن فعل ذلك فالنار النار.»
Its chain is weak due to the ‘an‘anah (ambiguous transmission) of two mudallis narrators: Ibn Jurayj and Abu al-Zubayr.
◄ Also in Sunan Ibn Majah, there is a narration from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
«لا تعلموا العلم لتباهوا به العلماء أو لتماروا به السفهاء أو لتصرفوا وجوه الناس إليكم فمن فعل ذلك فهو فى النار.» [ح259]
In the chain of this narration, Bashir bin Maymun is: Matruk (abandoned), accused [تقريب التهذيب : 259], and Ash‘ath bin Sawwar is weak. See: [تقريب التهذيب : 524]
◄ In another narration of Sunan Ibn Majah, it is reported that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
«من تعلم العلم ليباهي به العلماء ويجاري به السفهاء ويصرف به وجوه الناس إليه أدخله الله جهنم.» [ح260]
In its chain, Abdullah bin Sa‘id bin Abi Sa‘id al-Maqburi is: Matruk (abandoned). [تقريب التهذيب : 3356]
↰ Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah, after gathering the weak narrations, has declared this narration to be hasan (good), whereas it does not reach the level of hasan but remains weak.

Benefit:
The forthcoming hadith [اضواء المصابيح: 227، ابوداود : 3664، ابن ماجه : 252] makes one independent of this weak narration. «والحمد لله»
