1؎: By "understanding of the religion" is meant knowledge of the Book and the Sunnah, knowledge of authentic, weak, and fabricated narrations in the corpus of hadith, knowledge of the rulings and issues of Islamic law (shari‘ah), and the ability to distinguish between lawful (halal) and unlawful (haram). From this perspective, who could be a greater embodiment of this hadith than the noble Companions (Sahabah kiram) and the esteemed hadith scholars (muhaddithin ‘izam), who, through immense effort, gathered the scattered corpus of hadith and then arranged it in a juristic (fiqhi) manner under various books and chapters? Alas, a thousand times alas for those who, disregarding these great services of the hadith scholars, consider as jurists (fuqaha) those whose jurisprudence is more influenced by their own opinions than by the Book and the Sunnah, whereas the noble hadith scholars completely refrained from following their own opinions.

Alas, a thousand times alas for those who, ignoring these great services of the hadith scholars, consider such people as jurists (fuqaha) whose jurisprudence is more influenced by their own opinions than by the Book and the Sunnah, whereas the noble hadith scholars completely refrained from their own opinions.
