Hadith 261

´Ibn Mas'ud narrated that :` the Prophet said: "When one of you bows then says while he is bowing: (Subhana Rabbiyal Azim) 'Glorious is my Lord the Magnificent' three times, then he has completed his bowing. And that is the least of it. And when he prostrates and says while prostrating: (Subhana Rabbiyal A'la) 'Glorious is my Lord the Most High' three times, then he has completed his prostrations, and that is the least of it.'"

However, this hadith is strengthened by the narrations of Abu Bakrah, Jubayr ibn Mut'im, and Abu Malik al-Ash'ari radi Allahu anhum. Although there is some criticism regarding each of these narrations, the collective chain of transmissions raises the matter to the level of being suitable for evidence.

Note:
(Awn did not hear directly from Ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu, as the author himself has stated.)

886. Commentary:
These tasbihat (words of glorification) are established from authentic ahadith. For example, the hadith of Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu [871۔ 874]. However, as for the minimum number being three, there is hardly any authentic hadith in this regard; all are weak. Nevertheless, due to the abundance of narrations, they gain some strength.
Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah, on the basis of multiple chains, has declared as authentic the practical hadith of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam—that is, the narration in which it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam actually said the tasbihat three times. As for those narrations in which there is a command to say the tasbihat three times, he has declared them weak. See: [صفة الصلاة ص 132۔ 135]
Thus, it is as if, through the action of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, the affirmation of saying the mentioned tasbihat three times is established.
