Hadith 2589

´Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet (s.a.w) said:` "This Fire of yours, which the sons of Adam kindle, is one part from seventy parts of the heat of the Hell." They said: "By Allah! Would it not have been enough O Messenger of Allah?!" He said: "It is sixty-nine parts more – all of them similar in heat.” (Sahih)

Hadith Commentary:

The meaning of the worldly fire being one part of the seventy parts of the fire of Hell is that if all the fire in the world, which people kindle, were gathered together, it would constitute only one part of the fire of Hell, and the fire of Hell is seventy times hotter than this fire. In fact, according to the narration of Musnad Ahmad, the fire of Hell possesses a hundred degrees more burning power compared to the fire of this world.
(Musnad Ahmad: 2/379)

It should be noted that some types of worldly fire are such that they can melt iron into liquid within a few minutes—may Allah protect us from it. In the marfu‘ narration of Musnad Ahmad, it is stated:
If this fire were not cooled again in water, you would not be able to benefit from it.
(Musnad Ahmad: 2/244)

Hadith Commentary:
Benefits and Issues:
Even among the types of fire in this world, there is a great difference and variation in temperature:
the fire of grass and straw,
the fire of wood,
the fire of stone coals,
the fire of bombs and atomic bombs—
in this way, in the Hereafter, the temperature of the fire of Hell will be seventy times greater than ordinary fire, and the wisdom behind why Allah, the Exalted, has increased its heat to such an extent is known only to Him.
We should fear the wrath and majesty of Allah and be concerned about saving ourselves from the fire of Hell.
May Allah protect us from it by His generosity and grace.

Explanation of the Hadith:
"(A portion from seventy portions of the heat of Hell)"
The meaning of this part of the hadith is that all the fire of this world, in its heat and intensity, is only one portion out of the seventy (70) portions of the fire of Hell. (Irshad al-Sari: 5/289)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar says: "In the narration of Musnad Ahmad, the wording is ((min mi’ati juz’in)), meaning the fire of this world is one portion out of the hundred (100) portions of the fire of Hell."
At first glance, there appears to be a contradiction between these two narrations, because in one narration the number is seventy, while in the other it is one hundred. The reconciliation between these hadiths and other similar narrations, in which different numbers are mentioned, is that the purpose here is to describe the extreme intensity of the fire of Hell, not to specify a particular number. (Fath al-Bari: 6/334)
And the Arabs, in their speech, frequently use the number seventy to indicate abundance. As Allah the Exalted has addressed the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in the Noble Qur’an:

"Ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them (it is the same); even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will never forgive them."
Allah informed the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that the hypocrites are not worthy of Allah’s forgiveness. Therefore, whether you seek forgiveness for them or not, it is the same. And the intent behind the number seventy is exaggeration, not that if the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam were to seek forgiveness more than seventy times, Allah would forgive the hypocrites. Similarly, in the aforementioned hadith, the purpose is to describe the intensity and severity of the heat of the fire of Hell.
Imam Ghazali says: The fire of this world and the fire of Hell are not comparable (but the purpose of this hadith is that) when the most severe punishment in this world is from its fire, then what will be the punishment of the fire of Hell, which is far greater than the fire of this world? (Irshad al-Sari: 5/289)
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
"Indeed, this fire of yours is one portion out of seventy portions of the fire of Hell. And if it had not been extinguished with water twice, you would not have benefited from it." (Sunan Ibn Majah, Book of the Description of the Fire, Hadith: 4318 – Al-Albani rahimahullah declared it 'Sahih')
"Indeed, your fire in this world is one portion out of seventy portions of the fire of Hell (i.e., the fire of Hell is seventy (70) times more intense in heat than this fire), and if it had not been extinguished with water twice, you would not have been able to benefit from it."
In the Noble Qur’an it is stated:

"(O Prophet!) Say: The fire of Hell is far more intense in heat (than the fire of this world)."

The Horrors of Hell:
Allah the Exalted has stated in His Noble Book:

"No! Indeed, it is a blazing fire, stripping away the skin."
He further said:
__QUR_22_19-22__
"Scalding water will be poured over their heads, by which what is within their bellies and their skins will be melted. And for them are maces of iron. Whenever they want to escape from it out of anguish, they will be returned to it, and (it will be said), 'Taste the punishment of the burning!'"
And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Nu’man bin Bashir radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
"On the Day of Resurrection, the lightest punishment for the people of Hell will be for the one who will be made to wear two sandals and two straps of fire, due to which his brain will boil as a cauldron boils. Yet he will think that none among the people of Hell is being punished more severely than him, although he will be receiving the lightest punishment."
(Sahih Bukhari, Book of Softening the Hearts, Hadith: 6561 – Sahih Muslim, Book of Faith, Hadith: 364, 213)

The meaning of ((in kanat lakaafiyatana)) is that for the punishment of the disbelievers and sinners, even the fire of this world would have sufficed.

((fa innaha fuddilat ‘alayha bitis’atin wa sittina juz’an)) "So indeed, the fire of Hell is superior to the fire of this world by sixty-nine (69) degrees." Its meaning is that Allah’s punishment with fire will be distinct from the punishment of the creation.

Conclusion: ....... From this hadith, it is also known that Hell has already been created, and for this reason, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has mentioned this hadith under the chapter ((Bab Sifat al-Nar wa annaha Makhluqatun)) "The Description of Hell and the Statement that Hell has already been created and exists." Whereas the Mu’tazilah and Qadariyyah deny this. Thus, Imam Bukhari established this chapter specifically to refute the Mu’tazilah and Qadariyyah. Therefore, Sahih Bukhari is not only a book of hadith, jurisprudence, and principles, but also a book of creed, which refutes the false sects in a precise manner.

[واخرجه البخاري 3265 من حديث مالك، ومسلم 2843 من حديث ابي الزناد به]

Explanation (Tafaqquh):
➊ The fire of Hell is much hotter than the fire of this world; therefore, the disbelievers, hypocrites, and those who oppose the Book and the Sunnah should reflect upon their ultimate end.
➋ The Day of Judgment and life after death are true realities.
