Hadith 253

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاق، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، وَالْأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يُكَبِّرُ فِي كُلِّ خَفْضٍ وَرَفْعٍ وَقِيَامٍ وَقُعُودٍ " ، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ ، وَعُمَرُ . قَالَ : وَفِي الْبَاب عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، وَأَنَسٍ ، وَابْنِ عُمَرَ ، وأَبِي مَالِكٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ , وَأَبِي مُوسَى , وَعِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ , ووَائِلِ بْنِ حُجْرٍ , وَابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى : حَدِيثُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ، وَالْعَمَلُ عَلَيْهِ عِنْدَ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، مِنْهُمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ , وَعُمَرُ ، وَعُثْمَانُ , وَعَلِيٌّ وَغَيْرُهُمْ وَمَنْ بَعْدَهُمْ مِنَ التَّابِعِينَ وَعَلَيْهِ عَامَّةُ الْفُقَهَاءِ وَالْعُلَمَاءِ .
´Abdullah bin Mas'ud narrated:` "Allah's Messenger would say the Takbir for every lowering and raising, standing and sitting, and (so did) Abu Bakr and Umar."

English Commentary:
1:
In this way, there are a total of eleven takbirs in a two-unit (rak‘ah) prayer, and twenty-two takbirs in a four-unit (rak‘ah) prayer, and in all five obligatory prayers, there are a total of ninety-four takbirs.
It should be noted that when rising from bowing (ruku‘), you would say ((Sami‘a Allahu liman hamidah)),
therefore, this is an exception from the generality of this hadith.
Among these takbirs, only the opening takbir (takbir al-tahrimah) is obligatory (fard), the rest are Sunnah; if they are missed by someone, the prayer is still valid, but the virtue and conformity to the Sunnah are lost thereby.

747. Commentary:
The command regarding *tatbeeq* in bowing (ruku‘) had been abrogated; perhaps Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud radi Allahu anhu was not informed of this, or he did not remember it.

755. Commentary:
Placing the hands in such a way during standing (qiyam) that the right hand is over the left is a mutawatir Sunnah (a Sunnah established by continuous and widespread transmission). Furthermore, scholars should continue to rectify and guide the general public.

1084. Commentary: "At every bowing and rising." However, rising from bowing (ruku‘) is an exception to this, for at that point, saying «سمعَ اللَّهُ لمن حمدَهُ» is Sunnah instead of "Allahu Akbar." In other words, the rare instance has been subordinated to the more frequent practice.
