776. Commentary:
Allamah Shawkani rahimahullah states that it is preferable and superior to choose only those supplications (adhkar) which are authentically established from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam through sound chains of narration. Among the opening supplications of prayer, the most authentic is the hadith of Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu: «يعني اللهم باعد بيني و بين . . .» [صحيح بخاري حديث 744۔ وصحيح مسلم حديث 598] After this comes the hadith of Ali radi Allahu anhu, that is, «وجهت وجهي للذي فطر السموات . . . الخ», and the hadith of Aishah radi Allahu anha and Abu Sa'id radi Allahu anhu, that is, «سبحانك اللهم . . . الخ», about which there is some discussion. [نيل الاوطار 215/2۔ تا 219]
However, Imam Shawkani rahimahullah, in the next chapter, has also considered this hadith to be actionable due to supporting narrations.
Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has declared this hadith to be authentic.
In addition, our researcher (Shaykh Zubair Ali Zai rahimahullah) has also declared it authentic.
Therefore, reciting this opening supplication is also correct; although in terms of the grading of the hadith, its rank is third, it is still authentic.
