Brief Explanation
1؎ : Although this hadith is weak in its chain of transmission, all the scholars are in agreement that if there are two people and there is enough space in the place, then both followers (muqtadis) will stand behind, and the one who is the imam will stand in front. As for the incident of Ibn Mas‘ud radi Allahu anhu having both stand to his right and left alongside him, it is possible that the space there was such (i.e., limited). Otherwise, in this very incident, it is mentioned that he performed tatbeeq in bowing (ruku‘) and had both of them do it as well. Tatbeeq means: in bowing (ruku‘) or in the sitting posture (tashahhud), the worshipper (musalli) places both his hands or palms between his thighs or knees, and this is abrogated and prohibited.

English Commentary:
Samurah bin Jundub radi Allahu anhu reports that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam commanded us that when we are three, then one of us should step forward (to lead).

Imam Tirmidhi says: ➊ The hadith of Samurah radi Allahu anhu is hasan ghareeb.
➋ In this chapter, there are also ahadith from Ibn Mas’ud, Jabir, and Anas bin Malik radi Allahu anhum.
➌ The practice of the people of knowledge is upon this: that when there are three people, two should stand behind the imam. Ibn Mas’ud radi Allahu anhu led ‘Alqamah and Aswad in prayer, placing one to his right and the other to his left, and Ibn Mas’ud radi Allahu anhu narrated this from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
➍ Some people have spoken about Isma’il bin Muslim al-Makki regarding his memorization.

Note:
(In the chain, Isma’il bin Muslim al-Makki is weak, but the original hadith is established through corroborating reports.)
