´Samurah bin Jundub narrated:` "Allah's Messenger ordered us that when we were three, then one of us should stand forward."
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
English Commentary:
Samurah bin Jundub radi Allahu anhu reports that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam commanded us that when we are three, then one of us should step forward (to lead).
Imam Tirmidhi says: ➊ The hadith of Samurah radi Allahu anhu is hasan ghareeb.
➋ In this chapter, there are also ahadith from Ibn Mas’ud, Jabir, and Anas bin Malik radi Allahu anhum.
➌ The practice of the people of knowledge is upon this: that when there are three people, two should stand behind the imam. Ibn Mas’ud radi Allahu anhu led ‘Alqamah and Aswad in prayer, placing one to his right and the other to his left, and Ibn Mas’ud radi Allahu anhu narrated this from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
➍ Some people have spoken about Isma’il bin Muslim al-Makki regarding his memorization.
Note:
(In the chain, Isma’il bin Muslim al-Makki is weak, but the original hadith is established through corroborating reports.)
