حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، وَالْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، قَالَ : جَاءَ مُعَاوِيَةُ إِلَى أَبِي هَاشِمِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ وَهُوَ مَرِيضٌ يَعُودُهُ ، فَقَالَ : يَا خَالُ ، مَا يُبْكِيكَ أَوَجَعٌ يُشْئِزُكَ أَمْ حِرْصٌ عَلَى الدُّنْيَا ، قَالَ : كُلٌّ لَا ، وَلَكِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ عَهْدًا لَمْ آخُذْ بِهِ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّمَا يَكْفِيكَ مِنْ جَمْعِ الْمَالِ خَادِمٌ وَمَرْكَبٌ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ " ، وَأَجِدُنِي الْيَوْمَ قَدْ جَمَعْتُ ، قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى : وَقَدْ رَوَى زَائِدَةُ، وَعَبِيدَةُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ سَمُرَةَ بْنِ سَهْمٍ، قَالَ : دَخَلَ مُعَاوِيَةُ عَلَى أَبِي هَاشِمٍ، فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ ، وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ بُرَيْدَةَ الْأَسْلَمِيِّ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
´Abu Wail narrated:` "Mu'awiyah came to Abu Hashim bin 'Uthbah to visit him when he was ill (and dying). He said: 'O Uncle! Why do you cry? Is it from the pangs of death or desire for this world?' He said: 'Neither of these. But the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) had commissioned me with an obligation that I did not abide by. He (s.a.w) said: "It suffices you to gather the wealth of a servant or a rider in the cause of Allah." And (it is only) today I find that I have gathered it.'"

Benefits and Issues:

➊ Visiting the sick is a right of a Muslim upon another Muslim.

➋ On the occasion of visiting, one should try to find out the distress of the patient and make efforts to alleviate it.

➌ If one receives more wealth than needed, instead of hoarding it, one should spend it to fulfill the needs of others.

➍ If wealth is accumulated through lawful (halal) means and, even after spending in the paths of righteousness, wealth remains, then this is not a sin. However, the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) used to consider this contrary to their lofty status and would feel regret over it.

(1) The heading established by Imam Nasa’i rahimahullah aims to clarify the issue that a person may keep a servant and a mount. This is not a matter of luxury or indulgence, but rather a necessity.

(2) This blessed hadith indicates indifference towards the world, its allurements, as well as its blessings and the accumulation of its wealth and possessions. The reality is that a servant of Allah who is a believer strives not to earn the world, but to earn the Hereafter, and his true priority is not to acquire the fleeting blessings of this perishable world, but rather to attain the eternal, everlasting, and imperishable blessings of the Hereafter. Instead of amassing heaps of unlawful and impermissible earnings, it is obligatory to focus on a little but lawful (halal) and pure earning. The clear evidence for this is the lifestyle of the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum. Allahumma, grant us success in what You love and are pleased with.

(3) “The best portion” means the companionship of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, or youthfulness.

(4) “Wealth” means there will be an abundance of spoils (ghanimah).

(5) “He accumulated” — this was his humility, otherwise he did not leave behind any inheritance. Radi Allahu anhu wa ardah.
