Hadith 2278

´Waki' bin 'Udus narrated that Abu Razin Al-'Uqaili said:` " The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said: " The believer's dreams are a portion of the forty portions of Prophet-hood. And it is (as if it is) on the leg of a bird, as long as it is not spoken of. But when it is spoken of it drops." I think he said: " And it should not be discussed except with an intelligent one or a beloved one."

Benefits and Issues:

The thing held in the bird’s claw may fall, and it is also possible that it does not fall. In the same way, as long as a dream has not been interpreted, it is possible that the indication given in the dream comes to pass, and it is also possible that it does not come to pass. Once it has been interpreted, then it takes on the meaning that has been stated.

Imam Bukhari rahimahullah states that if the first interpreter makes a mistake in interpreting, and after him another person gives the correct interpretation, then the second interpretation will be considered valid. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Ta’bir, Chapter: Whoever did not see the dream for the first interpreter if he did not get it right, Hadith: 7046)

The person interpreting the dream should not be ignorant, otherwise he will give an incorrect interpretation, which will become a cause of distress. Whereas a scholar will try to find a good explanation for it, and likewise a sincere friend will seek a good meaning, but a stranger will not have that sympathy in his heart, so it is possible that he may give an inappropriate interpretation.
