Hadith 2180

´Abu Waqid Al-Laithi narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) went out to Hunain he passed a tree that the idolaters called Dhat Anwat upon which they hung their weapons. They(the Companions) said:` "O Messenger of Allah! Make a Dhat Anwat for us as they have a Dhat Anwat.' The Prophet (s.a.w) said: "Subhan Allah! This is like what Musa's people said: Make for us a god like their gods. By the One in Whose is my soul! You shall follow the way of those who were before you."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
Explanation:
1:
The tree named Dhat Anwat was a type of lote tree (jujube tree). The polytheists, for the fulfillment of their needs, would hang their weapons on it and perform retreat (i'tikaf) around this tree.

2:
The meaning is that you will follow in the footsteps of the previous nations in acts of disobedience that are contrary to the Shari'ah. According to this statement of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the condition of Muslims today is indeed just like this. Thus, which habits and customs of the Jews, Christians, and polytheists are there that Muslims have not adopted?

Benefit:
The tree called Dhat Anwat was a type of lote tree (sidr). The polytheists would hang their weapons on this tree as a means of seeking fulfillment of needs, and they would circumambulate around this tree. Furthermore, it is understood from this that Muslims will follow in the footsteps of previous nations in acts of disobedience. Regrettably, the statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has come true, and today’s Muslims are seen adopting the customs and habits of the Jews, Christians, and polytheists. Yet these are the very disbelievers who are enemies of Allah and His Messenger; how can they ever be well-wishers of the Muslims? Now, through social media, print media, and electronic media, the Jews and Christians have firmly entrenched themselves in Muslim homes. One channel is religious, and the other belongs to the Jews and Christians. Instead of choosing the religious channel, the Muslim prefers the one belonging to the Jews and Christians!
