´'Uthman bin Abi Al-'As narrated:` "The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) came to me while I had a pain that almost ruined me. So,the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) said: 'Rub it with your right hand seven times and say A`udhu bi `Izzatillah Wa Qudratihi wa Sultanihi min sharri ma ajid." ("I seek refuge in Allah's might, power, an authority, from the evil of what I suffer.)" He said: "So I did it, and Allah removed what I had, and I never ceased telling my family and others to do it."

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: From this hadith, it is understood that while performing ruqyah (incantation), one should place the hand only on the area of pain and discomfort, and if there is pain throughout the body, then the hand should be passed over the entire body, so that the patient is also affected psychologically.

➊ A person may recite the prescribed supplications (masnun du‘a) himself and perform ruqyah (spiritual healing) upon himself.
➋ In the narration of Sahih Muslim, it is mentioned to say "Bismillah" three times and to recite the mentioned supplication seven times. (Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Salam, Chapter: The Recommendation of Placing One’s Hand on the Place of Pain with Supplication, Hadith: 2202)
