Takhrij:
Shaykh al-Albani has declared it weak; see: [ضعيف الترمذي 2098]
In *Bulugh al-Maram*, its being hasan from al-Tirmidhi is cited. In all the copies of al-Tirmidhi in my possession, it is only written that this hadith is gharib, and some of the people of hadith have spoken about (its narrator) ‘Abd al-Muhaymin ibn ‘Abbas ibn Sahl and have declared him weak due to his memory. The complete hadith is as follows:
Deliberation is from Allah, and haste is from Shaytan.”
Benefits:
➊ The Virtue of Deliberation and Acting with Thoughtfulness:
Although this hadith is weak in its chain, there are other authentic ahadith regarding the virtue of deliberation and acting with thoughtfulness. It is narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas radi Allahu anhuma that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said to the chief of the tribe ‘Abd al-Qays, al-Ashajj:
“Indeed, you have two qualities which Allah loves: forbearance and deliberation.”
It is narrated from ‘Abdullah ibn Sarjis al-Muzani that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“Good appearance, deliberation, and moderation are one part out of twenty-four parts of prophethood.”
➋ The Wisdom in Avoiding Haste and Adopting Deliberation:
For a person to resolve and properly manage the important matters that arise in life, three things are extremely necessary. The first of these is to reflect upon them oneself with the understanding and insight granted by Allah, to weigh their benefits and harms, to consider their outcomes—in short, to strive with all one’s effort to reach the correct conclusion. The second is consultation (shura). Allah the Exalted said:
“And consult them in the matter.”
And He said:
“And their affairs are (decided) by mutual consultation among them.”
The thinking of a single person cannot be as comprehensive as that which is formed in collaboration with others; through consultation, a person attains full insight into the matter.
The third is istikhara (seeking Allah’s guidance); that is, after thorough reflection and consultation, when one’s resolve is firm regarding a matter, one should entrust it to Allah by performing istikhara. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to teach the Companions radi Allahu anhum istikhara just as he would teach a surah of the Qur’an. He instructed that whenever one intends to do something, one should perform two rak‘ahs and recite the supplication of istikhara.
In reality, istikhara is the act of entrusting one’s affairs to Allah, and this is what is meant in Allah’s statement:
“So pardon them, and ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in the matter. Then when you have resolved, put your trust in Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who put their trust (in Him).”
Now, whoever keeps these three things in mind at every important juncture will rarely make a mistake, and Shaytan will not find an opportunity to deceive him. He will always have the support of his companions and the help of Allah, and he will never have to face regret.
But if he acts hastily, Shaytan will find an opportunity. The greater the haste, the greater Shaytan’s influence. If neither istikhara, consultation, nor reflection is done, Shaytan will have full opportunity; and if any one of these is omitted, he will have an opportunity to interfere accordingly.
➌ One Should Not Delay in Obeying the Command of Allah and His Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam:
It should be clear that in those matters for which there is a clear command to act, one should not delay, because delaying in such matters is wasting time and displeasing Allah. If one delays in such matters, there is a danger that later Allah may take away the ability (tawfiq) to act. Allah the Exalted says:
“O you who believe! Respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life (i.e., jihad—Ashraf al-Hawashi), and know that Allah comes between a man and his heart, and that to Him you will be gathered.”
The command to hasten in good deeds is mentioned in many verses and ahadith. For example, He said:
“Race towards good deeds.”
And He said:
“And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a Paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth.”
In such matters, there is no need for reflection, consultation, or istikhara:
For seeking good, there is no need for istikhara.

Takhrij:
The mentioned narration is weak in its chain of transmission; however, haste is a blameworthy act, because acting in such a manner deprives one of the opportunity to reflect upon the outcome of matters and to thoroughly investigate them, and as a result of this, a person reaches the brink of destruction.
In any case, one should avoid it.
