´Jabir bin Abdullah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:` "Every good is charity. Indeed among the good is to meet your brother with a smiling face, and to pour what is left in your bucket into the vessel of your brother."
Explanation & Benefits

Explanation: 1؎ :
From this hadith, it is understood that spending only wealth is not charity (sadaqah); rather, every good deed is charity. Thus, pouring some water from your own bucket into your brother’s bucket is also charity, and smiling in the face of your Muslim brother is also charity.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Ma'ruf (goodness) is a comprehensive term that includes every act of obedience to Allah, every means of drawing near to Allah, and every act of kindness and benevolence towards people. In other words, every good deed or good word is ma'ruf, for which there is a reward in the Hereafter. Thus, the statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is:
"Do not consider any act of goodness insignificant, even if it is that you meet your brother with a cheerful face."
(Sahih Muslim, al-Birr wa al-Silah, Hadith: 6690(2626))
In a narration reported from Jabir (radi Allahu anhu):
"Pouring water from your bucket into your brother's vessel is also a good deed (ma'ruf)."
(Jami' al-Tirmidhi, al-Birr wa al-Silah, Hadith: 1970)
(2)
In the ahadith, good deeds and good words have been described as charity (sadaqah), as will be clarified in the following hadith.

Benefits:
➊ The meaning of "ma'ruf" is that which is recognized, i.e., an action whose goodness is well-known according to the Shari'ah or reason.
➋ The essence of charity (sadaqah) is that a person willingly gives something from his wealth to please Allah. From this hadith, it is understood that a person can attain the reward of charity not only by spending wealth, but also by utilizing other God-given abilities. As narrated by Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "Charity is due from every Muslim." The people asked: "What if he does not find (anything to give)?" He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "He should work with his hands, benefit himself, and give charity." They asked: "What if he is unable to do that or does not do it?" He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "He should help someone in need or who is oppressed." They said: "What if he does not do that?" He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "Then he should enjoin good." They asked: "What if he does not do even that?" He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "Then he should refrain from evil, and that is charity for him." [ صحیح بخاری 2022]
It is narrated from Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "Your smiling at your brother is charity for you, and your enjoining good and forbidding evil is charity for you, and your removing a stone, thorn, or bone from the road is charity for you, and your pouring water from your bucket into your brother's bucket is charity."
