Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
Explanation:
1:
The meaning is that Satan has despaired of Muslims apostatizing and returning to idol worship,
and of being worshipped by them.
After this despair, he is now engaged in trying to incite Muslims against one another,
to instill cowardice within them,
and to keep them occupied with conflict, strife, and tribulations.

Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
al-tahreeš:
to incite,
to provoke.

Benefits and Issues: This hadith establishes that Satan has despaired of the Arabs returning to idol worship and of the dominance and supremacy of disbelievers over the Arabian Peninsula.
However, he has not despaired of sowing discord and corruption among them and of creating mutual enmity and hostility.
Therefore, he exerts his full effort to ignite the fire of internal discord and corruption and to create division and dissension among them.
For this reason, up to this day, idol worship has not occurred in the Arabian Peninsula.
But this does not mean that,
apart from idol worship,
no other form of shirk (associating partners with Allah) will ever arise,
nor that people will not fall into excessiveness regarding righteous individuals, prophets, or angels, and will not seek help and intercession from their graves.

Takhrij:

Fiqh al-Hadith:
➊ This hadith is very clear in this regard that the Companions (Sahabah) will not commit shirk (polytheism), and indeed, this is what happened. Not a single Companion has been proven to have committed shirk after accepting Islam. «والحمدلله»
➋ This hadith alludes to the mutual conflicts among the Companions, such as the Battle of Jamal and the Battle of Siffin.
➌ To claim that shirk will never occur in the Muslim Ummah or in the Arabian Peninsula until the Day of Judgment is a baseless assertion, for which some attempt to alter the meanings of certain ahadith. However, authentic ahadith prove that shirk will occur among some individuals of the Muslim Ummah. For example:
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
«لا تقوم الساعة حتيٰ تضطرب أليات نساء دوس عليٰ ذي الخلصة.»
“The Hour will not be established until the women of Daws (tribe) move their hips while circumambulating Dhu al-Khalasah (the idol and taghut of the tribe of Daws).”
↰ This hadith proves that shirk will be committed in the Arabian Peninsula before the Day of Judgment.

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
«ولا تقوم الساعة حتىٰ تلحق قبائل من أمتي بالمشركين وحتىٰ تعبد قبائل من أمتي الأوثان»
“And the Hour will not be established until some tribes of my Ummah join the polytheists and until some tribes of my Ummah worship idols.” [
↰ This hadith shows that some people from the Ummah of Muhammad will commit shirk.

In an authentic narration, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
«ما أخاف عليكم أن تشركوا»
“I do not fear that you will commit shirk.” [
In the explanation of this hadith:
◈ Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani writes:
«أي علىٰ مجموعكم، لأن ذلك قد وقع من البعض أعاذنا الله تعالىٰ»
“That is, by consensus, you will not commit shirk, because its occurrence has happened from some (members of the Ummah). May Allah protect us.”
◈ Nawawi said:
«وأنها لا ترتد جملة»
“And indeed, the Ummah will not, by consensus, become apostate.” [
◈ ‘Ayni al-Hanafi said:
«معناه عليٰ مجموعكم لأن ذلك قد وقع من البعض والعياذ بالله تعاليٰ»
“Its meaning is that you will not, by consensus, commit shirk, because its occurrence has happened from some, and may Allah, the Exalted, protect (us).”
◈ Karmani said:
«وأنها لا ترتد جملة وقد عصمها من ذلك»
“And the Ummah will not, by consensus, become apostate, and indeed He (Allah) has protected it.”
◈ Qastallani said:
«أي ما أخاف علىٰ جميعكم الإشراك بل علىٰ مجموعكم لأن ذلك قد وقع من بعض»
“That is, I do not fear that all of you (the Ummah) will, by consensus, commit shirk, because its occurrence has happened from some people.”
◈ Ghulam Rasool Saeedi Barelvi writes:
“That is, you (the Prophet) did not fear that the entire Ummah would become polytheist, so the apostasy of some people who become Hindu or Christian is not against the prophecy of this hadith.”
From these clarifications, it is evident that the entire Ummah will never, by consensus, commit shirk. However, it will happen that some individuals from the Ummah will commit shirk. Therefore, those who say that shirk will not occur in the Ummah of Muhammad, their statement is contrary to the authentic hadith of Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and Sunan Abi Dawud, as well as the clarifications of the commentators of hadith and even Barelvi research. For details, see: The research article by the respected Abu al-Asjad Muhammad Siddiq Raza hafizahullah, “The Ummah of Mustafa sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and Shirk,” published in Studying this article is extremely beneficial and it removes all the doubts of the modern-day Barelvi innovators. «والحمدلله»
