Hadith 1817

It is narrated from Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took the hand of a leper and put it with his own in a bowl, then said: "Eat in the name of Allah, relying on Him and trusting in Him." 1. © Imam Tirmidhi says:
1- This hadith is gharib; we know it only from the narration of Yunus bin Muhammad, who narrates it from Mufaddal bin Fadalah.
2- This Mufaddal bin Fadalah is a Basri shaykh; there is another Basri shaykh named Mufaddal bin Fadalah who is a more reliable and well-known narrator than him.
3- Shu’bah has narrated this hadith via: «حبيب بن الشهيد عن ابن بريدة أن ابن عمر» that he (Ibn Umar) took the hand of a leper; in my view, the hadith of Shu’bah is more authentic and established.

Brief Explanation
1؎ : The scholars say that you did this to show those people who are strong in their faith and trust (tawakkul), and who endure disliked matters with patience and refer them to divine decree (qada wa qadar). This is why, for those who cannot be patient over disliked matters and feel fear regarding themselves, you said: «فر من المجذوم كما تفر من الأسد». Therefore, it is recommended (mustahabb) to avoid and keep away from such people, but it is not obligatory (wajib), and eating and drinking with them is to clarify its permissibility.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
Explanation:
1:
The scholars say that the Prophet did this to show those who are strong in their faith and trust (tawakkul), and who endure disliked matters with patience and refer them to divine decree (qada wa qadar). That is why, for those who cannot be patient over disliked matters and feel fear regarding themselves, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: (Farr min al-majdhūm kamā tafirr min al-asad) — "Flee from the leper as you would flee from a lion." Thus, for such people, avoiding and keeping away from them is recommended (mustahabb), but not obligatory (wajib), and eating and drinking with them is to clarify its permissibility.

Note:
(In the chain of narration, Mufaddal Basri is a weak narrator.)

Benefits and Issues:
This narration is weak in its chain of transmission.
However, it is permissible for a person of faith and conviction to eat together with a sick person, and in a Muslim household and society, it is forbidden to completely ostracize a patient like the non-Muslims, especially the Hindus, do.
