باب مَا جَاءَ فِي الرَّايَاتِChapter: ….
Hadith 1681
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاق وَهُوَ السَّالِحَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ، قَال : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا مِجْلَزٍ لَاحِقَ بْنَ حُمَيْدٍ يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ : " كَانَتْ رَايَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَوْدَاءَ ، وَلِوَاؤُهُ أَبْيَضَ " ، قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى : هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ ، مِنْ حَدِيثِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ .
'Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) says that the flag of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was black and the banner was white. © Imam Tirmidhi says:
This narration of Ibn Abbas with this chain is Hasan Gharib.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ By “black” is not meant pure black; rather, this flag was made of striped cloth and was square-shaped. (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, al-Jihad, Chapter: What Has Been Related About Banners, Hadith: 1680)
➋ In war, the flags of different battalions can be of different colors.
➌ Both (rayah) and (liwa’) mean “flag.” In this respect, they are synonymous words; however, according to one opinion, (rayah) is a large flag and (liwa’) is a small flag (Hashiyah Sunan Ibn Majah by Muhammad Fu’ad ‘Abd al-Baqi). We have translated according to the other opinion.
