It is narrated from Sahl bin Hunaif (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever sincerely asks Allah for martyrdom, Allah will grant him the rank of the martyrs even if he dies on his bed." 1. © Imam Tirmidhi says:
1- The hadith of Sahl bin Hunaif is Hasan Gharib; we know it only from the narration of Abdur Rahman bin Shuraih. This hadith has also been narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Shuraih by Abdullah bin Salih. The kunyah of Abdur Rahman bin Shuraih is Abu Shuraih, and he is an Iskandarani (resident of Alexandria).
2- In this chapter, there is also a narration from Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation:
1:
That is, even if he does not die as a martyr, he will still be counted among the martyrs and will receive the reward of the martyrs. It is as if, due to sincerely supplicating for martyrdom, he attained this rank.
Believers should continuously supplicate for martyrdom in the path of Allah.

“With a sincere heart”—not merely as a rhetorical display, as is commonly practiced. ➋ “Will ask for martyrdom”—this is not a supplication for death itself, but rather a supplication for a good death, whenever it may come. And this is recommended (mustahabb).

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: To have a good intention and to sincerely desire and long for a certain deed from the depths of one’s heart is such a pure act that Allah, the Exalted, out of His grace and mercy, grants a reward and recompense for it even without the actual performance of the deed. May Allah, the Exalted, grant us the ability to have sincerity of intention.
