Hadith 1652

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْأَشَجِّ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ النَّاسِ ؟ رَجُلٌ مُمْسِكٌ بِعِنَانِ فَرَسِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِالَّذِي يَتْلُوهُ ؟ رَجُلٌ مُعْتَزِلٌ فِي غُنَيْمَةٍ لَهُ يُؤَدِّي حَقَّ اللَّهِ فِيهَا ، أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِشَرِّ النَّاسِ ؟ رَجُلٌ يُسْأَلُ بِاللَّهِ وَلَا يُعْطِي بِهِ " ، قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى : هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ ، وَيُرْوَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ مِنْ غَيْرِ وَجْهٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Narrated from Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you about the best person among you? He is the one who holds the reins of his horse in the way of Allah. Shall I not tell you about the person who is next in rank to him? He is the one who, staying apart from people, lives among his goats and fulfills the rights of Allah. Shall I not tell you about the worst person? He is the one who, when asked in the name of Allah, does not give." © Imam Tirmidhi says:
1- This hadith is Hasan Gharib through this chain,
2- This hadith has come through several chains from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) in a marfu' manner.

(1) "He takes his horse around." That is, he engages in jihad. Jihad in the path of Allah is, in general, the highest deed. And to live in seclusion in a mountain pass is only superior when the protection of religion is intended and it becomes extremely difficult to remain steadfast on religion while living among people; otherwise, living among people and enjoining good and forbidding evil (amr bil-ma'ruf wa nahi 'anil-munkar) is superior. Monasticism is not permitted.

(2) "From the evil of people." That is, he protects his religion, or it means that he does not cause harm to people. Protecting people from one's own evil is also a great virtue.

(3) [اَلَّذِیْ یَسْأَلُ بِاللّٰہِ] Kuyus'alu (passive) has also been recited, the translation of which would be: from whom it is asked in the name of Allah but he does not give. In the first meaning, two faults are combined: asking from people and not giving oneself, whereas in the second meaning, there is only one fault. The wording of the hadith accommodates both meanings. And Allah knows best.
