Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to attack at the time of Fajr prayer. If he heard the call to prayer, he would stop, otherwise he would attack. One day he listened carefully and heard a man saying: «الله أكبر الله أكبر». The Prophet said: "He is upon the natural religion (Islam)." When the man said «أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله», the Prophet said: "You have been saved from the Hellfire." Hasan says: Abu Al-Walid narrated to us, he said: Hammad bin Salamah narrated to us with this same chain and in a similar manner. © Imam Tirmidhi says:
This hadith is Hasan Sahih.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: The sound of the call to prayer (adhan) coming from a village or settlement is evidence that its inhabitants are Muslim. Therefore, an attack should not be carried out on such a settlement. A shepherd's testimony to the oneness of Allah is proof of his being a Muslim. Upon this testimony, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) gave him the glad tidings of being saved from the Fire. This has no connection to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) possessing knowledge of the unseen (al-ghayb).

Benefits and Issues:
The hearing of the adhan (call to prayer) is an indication that the inhabitants of that place are Muslims.
Therefore, they were not attacked.
The absence of the sound of the adhan is an indication that the inhabitants of that place are not Muslims.
Hence, they would be attacked.
