باب مَا جَاءَ فِي طَعَامِ الْمُشْرِكِينَChapter: Description of the Food of Disbelievers and Polytheists
Hadith 1565
حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، أَخْبَرَنِي سِمَاكُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، قَال : سَمِعْتُ قَبِيصَةَ بْنَ هُلْبٍ يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ طَعَامِ النَّصَارَى ؟ فَقَالَ : " لَا يَتَخَلَّجَنَّ فِي صَدْرِكَ طَعَامٌ ضَارَعْتَ فِيهِ النَّصْرَانِيَّةَ " ، قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى : هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ .
Hilb (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the food of the Christians, so he said: "Do not eat any food that causes doubt in your heart that by doing so you may resemble the Christians." © Imam Tirmidhi says: This hadith is Hasan.
قَالَ مَحْمُودٌ : وَقَالَ وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ : عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ، عَنْ مُرَيِّ بْنِ قَطَرِيٍّ، عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ حَاتِمٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، مِثْلَهُ ، وَالْعَمَلُ عَلَى هَذَا عِنْدَ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ مِنَ الرُّخْصَةِ فِي طَعَامِ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ .
With this chain, a similar hadith is also narrated from ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him). © Imam Tirmidhi says:
The scholars act upon this, that there is concession regarding the food of the People of the Book.

سَمِعْت مَحْمُودًا، وَقَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُوسَى : عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ، عَنْ قَبِيصَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، مِثْلَهُ .
A similar hadith is narrated from Hilb (may Allah be pleased with him) through this chain as well.

Explanation:
1:
Since the Islamic community (ummah) is connected to the Abrahamic community (millat Ibrahimi), being excessively doubtful regarding food brings one closer to the monasticism (rahbaniyyah) that is the religion of the Christians (nasara). Therefore, protect yourself from this.
Imam Tirmidhi has mentioned the food of the polytheists (mushrikin) in this chapter, whereas there is no mention of the polytheists at all in the hadith. It appears from the hadith that Imam Tirmidhi has intended by "polytheists" the People of the Book (Ahl al-Kitab).
Note:
(In the chain of narration, "Miri bin Qutri" is weak in hadith (lin al-hadith), but by being supported by the previous hadith, this hadith is also hasan li-ghayrihi.)
