حَدَّثَنَا
أبو سلمة يَحْيَى بْنُ خَلَفٍ الْبَصْرِيُّ , حَدَّثَنَا
بِشْرُ بْنُ الْمُفَضَّلِ , أَخْبَرَنَا
عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ , عَنْ
يُوسُفَ بْنِ مَاهَكَ , أَنَّهُمْ دَخَلُوا عَلَى
حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ فَسَأَلُوهَا عَنِ الْعَقِيقَةِ ، فَأَخْبَرَتْهُمْ ، أَنَّ
عَائِشَةَ أَخْبَرَتْهَا , أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَمَرَهُمْ عَنِ الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ مُكَافِئَتَانِ , وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ " , قَالَ : وَفِي الْبَاب , عَنْ عَلِيٍّ , وَأُمِّ كُرْزٍ , وَبُرَيْدَةَ , وَسَمُرَةَ , وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ , وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو , وَأَنَسٍ , وَسَلْمَانَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ , وَابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ , قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى : حَدِيثُ عَائِشَةَ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ , وَحَفْصَةُ هِيَ : بِنْتُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ .
´Narrated Yusuf bin Mahak:` They entered upon Hafsah bint 'Abdur-Rahman to ask her about the 'Aqiqah. She informed them that 'Aishah had informed her, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ordered them that for a boy, two sheep were sufficient, and for a girl one sheep.

‘Aqiqah refers to the animal sacrifice that is performed on behalf of a newborn.
It is also said that originally ‘aqiqah refers to the hair that grows on the head of the newborn while in the mother’s womb.
In this context, the animal that is sacrificed on behalf of the newborn is called ‘aqiqah.
Another opinion is that ‘aqiqah is derived from “‘aqq,” which means to tear and to cut.
The goat that is slaughtered is called ‘aqiqah because its limbs are cut into pieces and its belly is torn open.
From this hadith, it is understood that two goats should be sacrificed for a boy and one goat for a girl.
From the word “shaah” (goat/sheep), it is inferred that the conditions required for the sacrificial animal (udhiyah/qurbani) do not apply to the animal for ‘aqiqah.
However, it is better to observe the same precautions regarding defects and faults in the animal for ‘aqiqah as the Lawgiver (Shari‘) has instructed for the sacrificial animal.
There is no hadith that establishes the requirement for the ‘aqiqah animal to have two permanent teeth (thaniyyah).
However, the word “shaah” implies that it should be of mature age.
And the word “shaah” also implies that cows and camels are not permissible for ‘aqiqah.
If cows and camels were permissible for ‘aqiqah, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would not have mentioned only “shaah.”
