´Narrated 'Abdullah bin Mughaffal:` "I was one of those who held up the branches from the tree away from the face of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) while he was delivering the Khutbah saying: 'If it were not that dogs were a nation among nations, then I would order that they be killed. So kill every one among them that is all black. There is one inhabiting a home in which they keep a dog but their deeds are decreased by one Qirat every day - except for a hunting dog, or a farm dog, or a sheep dog.'"

Brief Explanation
1؎: You have referred to dogs as a creation like other creatures because Allah Ta’ala has stated: «وما من دآبة في الأرض ولا طائر يطير بجناحيه إلا أمم أمثالكم» “That is: There is no creature that moves upon the earth nor any bird that flies with its two wings but they are communities like you.” (Surah al-An’am: 38) From this hadith, it is understood that keeping dogs for hunting, guarding livestock, and protecting crops is permissible.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
Commentary: Explanation: 1: Dogs, like other creatures, are a creation. The author has stated this because Allah the Exalted says: ﴿وَمَامِندَآبَّةٍفِيالأَرْضِوَلاَطَائِرٍيَطِيرُبِجَنَاحَيْهِإِلاَّأُمَمٌأَمْثَالُكُم﴾ () (i.e.: All kinds of living beings that walk upon the earth and all kinds of birds that fly with their wings—there is not a single kind but that they are communities like you.) From this hadith, it is understood that keeping dogs for hunting, for the protection of livestock, and for the protection of crops is permissible.
