Hadith 1211

Narrated by Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "There are three people to whom Allah will not look (with mercy) on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them (from their sins), and for them is a painful punishment." We asked: O Messenger of Allah! Who are these people? They are certainly at a loss and in ruin. He said: "The one who reminds others of his favors, the one who lets his lower garment hang below his ankles 1, and the one who promotes his merchandise by means of false oaths 2." © Imam Tirmidhi says:
1- The hadith of Abu Dharr is Hasan Sahih (good and authentic),
2- In this chapter, there are also ahadith from Ibn Mas'ud, Abu Hurairah, Abu Umamah bin Tha'labah, Imran bin Husain, and Ma'qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with them).

Explanation & Benefits

Explanation:
1:
From this it is understood that letting the lower garment (tehband) hang below the ankles is forbidden (haram). The same ruling applies to shalwar, pajama, trousers, etc. It should be clear that this ruling is for men; for women, on the contrary, it is necessary to cover not only the ankles but even the feet.

2:
Swearing a false oath is absolutely forbidden (haram), but swearing a false oath with the intention of deceiving a customer in order to sell goods is an even greater crime. In this, two crimes are combined: one is the crime of swearing a false oath, and the other is the crime of deception.

(1) "He will not speak." However, there will be rebuke and scolding, but customarily this is not called speaking. This even occurs among enemies.

(2) "He will not purify." This is indeed the punishment, but if Allah Ta'ala forgives, then what objection can there be? After the punishment, every believer will certainly be forgiven.

Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:

(1)
لَا يُكَلِّمُهُمُ، وَلَا يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِمْ:
To speak with someone and to look towards him—these are signs that the person is being given importance and attention. To deprive someone of both these things is a sign of aversion and turning away, indicating that such people will have no importance or status.

(2)
وَلَا يُزَكِّيهِمْ:
For Muslims, the Fire will be a means of purification and cleansing from sins. These are such severe sins that even the Fire will not purify from them unless repentance is made.

(3)
الْمُسْبِلُ:
To let the turban, shirt, or lower garment (izaar) hang below what is necessary, out of pride and arrogance. Generally, the lower garment is let hang below the ankles, so this is usually mentioned. This is from "isbaal," meaning to let hang.

(4)
الْمَنَّانُ:
This is from "mann," meaning to remind of favors—to give something to someone and then make him feel obliged by reminding him of it.

(5)
الْمُنَفِّقُ:
From "nifaq." To promote, to make attractive.
"Sil'ah": merchandise, items for sale.

Benefits and Issues:
To let one's garment, etc., hang out of pride and arrogance, to remind someone of a favor after giving him something, and to excessively praise merchandise to entice people—these are things contrary to human dignity and Islamic character, and are a cause of harm and distress to others. Therefore, these have been declared extremely severe crimes, such that their commission not only deprives one of Allah's love, affection, and special attention, but these are crimes so grave that if one does not have the provision of faith and righteous deeds, even the Fire will not burn away these sins so that a person may become purified. Therefore, Muslims should avoid these actions.

Benefits and Issues:
To do a favor and then remind others of it, to sell goods by means of a false oath, and for men to let their garments hang below the ankles are all prohibited (haram) and major sins (kabirah).

Benefits and Issues:

For a man, it is forbidden (haram) to wear a lower garment, shalwar, or trousers, etc., so low that the ankles are covered.
To declare an act for which such a severe punishment has been prescribed as merely disliked (makruh) is not correct.

It is forbidden (haram) to wear the lower garment so low because it is an expression of arrogance (takabbur).
The Prophetic instruction is:
"Keep your lower garment (izaar) raised to the middle of the shin; if not, then keep it up to the ankles, and avoid letting the lower garment hang below that, for this is arrogance, and Allah does not like arrogance." (Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Clothing, Chapter: What has been reported regarding letting the lower garment hang, Hadith: 4084)

When a believer does good to someone, his intention should be to seek the pleasure of Allah.

Swearing a false oath by the name of Allah is contrary to the reverence due to Allah's sacred name.
And disrespecting the name of Allah is a major sin (kabirah).

(1) The purpose of the chapter heading established by the author rahimahullah is to explain the reprehensibility and abhorrence of selling goods by lying, as well as to warn about its dangerous consequences.

(2) From this blessed hadith, several attributes of Allah Ta'ala are known, such as: speaking, seeing, and purifying, etc. However, it must always be remembered that all the attributes of Allah Ta'ala are befitting to His Essence alone. They are by no means similar to the attributes found in creation, as is the belief of the misguided sect al-Mushabbihah. Furthermore, this completely refutes other misguided sects such as al-Mu‘attilah and al-Mumaththilah, who either deny the attributes of Allah Ta'ala or, while affirming them, liken them to the attributes of creation.

(3) This hadith indicates that Allah Ta'ala, on the Day of Resurrection, will bestow His gracious gaze upon His believing servants. He will look at them with love, purify them, and grant them salvation from punishment.

(4) Wearing trousers, waistcloth, pants, or pajamas, etc., below the ankles is absolutely haram for men. And this is a grave offense. Some people, when they come to the mosques for prayer, expose their ankles at that time, but after the prayer, they return to their previous state. This is duplicity.

(5) Selling goods by swearing a false oath, letting the waistcloth hang below the ankles, and reminding someone of favors after doing good to them are all major sins (kabirah). That is why the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has mentioned in the hadith a severe warning for those who commit these sins. May Allah protect us from it.

(6) “Will not speak” means He will not speak to them with love and affection. He will not look at them with mercy and compassion, nor will He purify them by forgiving their sins. The purpose of these statements is that Allah Ta'ala will remain angry and wrathful with them. In common parlance, rebuke and scolding in anger is not called speaking. Similarly, looking with anger and wrath is not called looking.

(7) “Lets his waistcloth hang down”—in another narration, it is stated: whoever drags his izar (waistcloth) on the ground out of arrogance. In one hadith, letting the garment hang below the ankles is described as arrogance. However, if despite care and attention, the garment occasionally goes below the ankles, then the aforementioned warning, insha Allah, does not apply to such a person.
